Year 10 Science – Chemical Flame Tests Practical

The Year 10 students recently completed a chemical flame test practical, exploring how burning different metal salts under an open flame causes the flame to change colour.

Through this engaging experiment, students learned that the unique colours observed are due to the metal’s electrons becoming ‘excited’ and jumping to higher energy levels. When these electrons return to their original energy state, the energy is released as light of a specific colour.

This practical not only provided an exciting visual demonstration, but also deepened students’ understanding of atomic structure and the behaviour of electrons in different elements. Well done to all students for their active participation and enthusiasm in the lab.

On Friday 14 August, a group of Year 10 students attended Flinders University’s annual Open Day and experienced an engaging introduction to life beyond high school.

Students participated in lectures across a variety of disciplines, including paramedicine, midwifery, engineering, education, business, and criminology.

This exposure allowed them to explore potential pathways and gain a clearer understanding of their future options.

At the many informative stalls, our students gathered valuable information on courses, scholarships, support services, and future opportunities at Flinders.

Throughout the day, our students represented Aberfoyle Park High School with professionalism, enthusiasm, and a genuine curiosity about their futures.

Experiences like the Flinders Open Day are invaluable in helping young people make informed choices as they plan for life after school.

Well done to all students involved.

Stage 2 Child Studies Connect with The Hub Preschool

Gallery Image

Our Stage 2 Child Studies students have enjoyed visiting The Hub Preschool twice this term, engaging with children and facilitating fun, hands-on learning experiences.

The first visit focused on play-based learning, with students leading activities including Dinosaur Exploring, Nature-Based Play and Potions Play.

The activities encouraged children to explore, imagine, problem-solve and develop their social and creative skills.

The second visit focused on supporting healthy practices. Students facilitated a fruit scavenger hunt and market, made fruit skewers, planted strawberry seeds and organised a Mini Olympics, where children developed their gross motor skills through jumping, hopping, throwing and movement. The highlight was seeing each child receive their own personalised Olympic medal.

Year 11 Business Innovation – Adelaide Hills Excursion

Gallery Image

On Tuesday the 18 August, Year 11 Business Innovation students headed to the Adelaide Hills for a day of hands-on business learning. They visited Melba's Chocolate Factory, Beerenberg Farm, and Hahndorf's main street.

As part of their current unit on South Australian businesses, students spoke directly with business owners, managers and store workers to explore how these businesses were established, the strategies they use to stay productive and grow, and the entrepreneurial thinking behind their success. These real-world insights will directly inform their upcoming assessment task.

The day began with a visit to Melba's Chocolate Factory, where they had the opportunity to listen to the Melba’s story, ask questions with a staff member, and share recess with the friendly Melba’s dog Charlie.

This was followed by a visit to Beerenberg Farm, where students had the opportunity to explore Strawberry Lane and learn about the history of Beerenberg. They also had the opportunity to try Beerenberg products and ask questions about each of them.

Our School Captains recently had the privilege of visiting Government House, hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for our Captains to connect with other student leaders from across South Australia, share ideas and hear a range of perspectives on leadership. It was a wonderful experience that allowed them to reflect on their own roles while learning from others.

Our students particularly valued hearing the Governor’s perspective on leadership and her insights into the important role young people play as future leaders.

They also appreciated the opportunity to engage in conversations about youth leadership and the vision for young people in South Australia.
