Year 5 Water Safety/Year 6 Aquatics

Water safety programs within the Education Department are continuing as normal at Port Noarlunga Beach this summer.

Water safety programs in schools are a crucial part of the curriculum that provide learning experiences and skills in water, on water and around water.

The risk from algal bloom is low, but the benefits of water safety education are too important to miss – these are skills that can save lives. Missing out on water safety education presents a far greater risk to our children and young people than the low risk posed by the algal bloom.

This term, water safety programs are planned for:

• Year 5 students (Water Safety) and 6 students (Aquatics) on Wednesday April 8.

Our students’ safety comes first, and every water safety program strictly follows the latest health advice and risk assessments.

Before starting any activities, qualified instructors check the condition of the water to ensure the safety of students and staff.

If the water is clear, it’s safe to swim and activities will continue.

If water is visibly affected by algal bloom – such as thick foam or discoloured water – the program will be moved to an alternative venue or a different activity will take place that day.

At Hackham East, we understand that families may be apprehensive about their child attending Water Safety (Year 5) and Aquatics (Year 6).  To help with planning and determine whether the excursion will go ahead, we will be surveying parents/caregivers to gauge students' participation in Water Safety and Aquatics this year.

A survey link will be sent to parents/caregivers of year 5/6 students at a later date.
