Interschool Sport

What a week in sport!

  Senior Sport

On Monday 2nd May our Senior Boys headed to our local Le Page Park for the Beachside Football Round Robin. With Captain Chugg revving up the boys all day, Max the leading goalkicker and Anish a tackling machine, it was a competitive day that saw Cheltenham come 3rd in the overall competition. Congratulations to the boys on their behaviour and sportsmanship throughout the event.

Our Senior Girls A and B Netball both played well, with the B team undefeated in their draw.

Congratulations to the senior students involved in these sports and we look forward to Wednesday 18th May, to complete the Beachside Term 2 events of Basketball, Soccer, Badminton and Handball.

Diversity in Sport

To celebrate diversity in sports, School Sports Victoria initiate a change in the usual activities for boys and girls. On Tuesday 3rd May Cheltenham students competed in Boys Netball and Girls Football. Senior Boys Netball A and B teams and the Intermediate B and C teams were all tested with strong competition, particularly in a Cheltenham verse Cheltenham game. Our Intermediate A team came runner up in their final. A huge congratulations to our Junior Boys Netball who defeated Port Melbourne in the final and will now compete in the Southern Metro Final later in the term.

Girls Senior Football and Intermediate Football both had great days out at sport. Thank you to the students who helped bring these teams together, determined to get the numbers required to put a team on the field. Both teams were very competitive in all their games although they missed out on making the next round. Sadly our very enthusiastic Junior girls could not field a team due to absences.

Southern Metro Final

Congratulations to our Year 7 Boys baseball team on winning the Southern Zone Final on Wednesday 5th May.  They are now through to the State Finals to be held on November 16th.

The boys won all three of their round-robin matches convincingly, defeating;

Cheltenham 15-1 Timbarra

Cheltenham 10-4 Patterson River

Cheltenham  8-2 Narre Warren South

The final against McKinnon Secondary College was anticipated to be a close and challenging match, however, Cheltenham came away with the win, 6-0, in the decider.

The boys' enthusiasm and support of one another was obvious throughout the day, with everyone contributing at key stages of each match.  In particular, Matt F. who lead from the front with strong support from Elliot B.

Intermediate Girls Football Team

The Intermediate Girls Football team competed for the Division Final against Prahran on Tuesday 3rd of May at the Highett Football complex in front of a capacity crowd of 10 dogs and 5 other schools.

After winning both their pool games against a combination of Elwood girls and barking Yavneh girls (yes you've read this correctly) they played in the final. Unfortunately, the girls started one short as our champion little runner Olivia hurt 3 fingers in a gutsy smother in game 2. We also lost our amazing captain Darcy early in the first half and all hope was almost lost once Ava went down in a fierce ruck duel. All have recovered fortunately which is great news.

The rest of the team struggled as they had run for 80 minutes without food or rest but battled on courageously which impressed Mr Mazurek and myself no end!

Dilay was fantastic as the ruck replacement and the girls down back (Anna, Lily and Zoe) were sensational dealing with the constant barrage from the Prahran midfield and forwards. Remember they were outnumbered at this stage 16 to 13!

Our rotating midfielders never stopped trying and never gave up and created some late chances in the last half and we were able to snag a couple of late goals. Tilly was brilliant all day as our target up forward and Lauren was tenacious and laid tackle of the day. Sarah was best on ground almost every game and Hayley (her soccer partner in crime) was fierce at ball and opposition also!

Special mention to our first gamers who were worthy contributors (Bella and Nat) and sisters Tahlia and Mikayla were amazing in all positions on the ground. Zara's speed created opportunities up the ground throughout the day and we could not have been prouder of them all.

What a great day?!!! Go Chelt and go girls!!

Mr Collings and Mr Mazurek.
