A Visit From Katherine Smith

Thursday 9th May HHS partnered with Eastern Health and the Yarra Ranges Council “It Takes a Town” project to bring AFLW star Katherine Smith out to speak to our junior students about her journey, following her passion, overcoming adversity and the wonderful young men who made a conscious decision to support her along the way. Katherine’s story was uplifting and inspiring and she had our junior students engaged from the moment she took to the microphone.

Katherine’s appearance at HHS is just one of the many ways we hope to empower and inspire our students to make better choices, focus on their own personal goals and be true to who they are.

Farm School

Our Farm School program is thriving again this year! We currently have ten hard working Year 9 boys attending the Woori Yallock Farm School every Thursday. The program is designed to be hands on and fun while also providing its participants with the opportunity to complete Certificate I in Conservation and Land Management. So far this semester the boys have been on some great excursions, spent time cultivating plants for local planting projects, had some fun at the beach looking at marine environments, hiked to seven acre rock and constructed fences and chook sheds on the school property. Expressions of interest are now open for Year 9 students who are interested in attending Farm School in semester two. The program is for both males and females and we encourage anyone who enjoys being hands on to give it a go.

This Girl Can

Thursday 9th May also saw the relaunch of the “This Girl Can” program for our Year 9 female students. The girls will participate in a six week program in either Term 2 or Term 3, where they will learn about protecting themselves, realising their inner and outer strength and empowering one another, as well as taking part in educational sessions relevant to the challenges that young women face. Topics included in the education sessions are:

•             Healthy v Unhealthy Relationships

•             Women’s Health

•             Healthy Relationships With Food and Body Image

•             Safety and Consent in Relationships & Social Media

•             Mindfulness, Mental Health and Self Care

•             Women’s Empowerment

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the many community organisations and businesses that have supported us to make the “This Girl Can” project possible. Thanks to Eastern Health, Healesville Health Hub, Headspace, Yarra Ranges Council, Eastern Community Legal, Freeform Martial Arts and EDVOS for their ongoing support of the school.
