VCE and Careers Expo

On Thursday 2nd May 32 Year 11 students went to the VCE and Careers Expo at Caufield Racecourse. Student were able to wander through over 100 exhibits from various institutions and gain ideas about future pathways. The exhibitions were very informative and students had the chance to chat to staff and collect reading materials and other material from the stands. Congratulations to Jinja Shub and Nick Strange who collected the most freebies on the day and a special mention to Carmen Hauptmann for her great collection also. I hope the students all now have some idea of possibilities for the future and are aware of how many students across the state are studying the Victorian Certificate of Education. Our students were wonderful and all reported to our meeting place outside, as the whole venue with over 5000 students were evacuated at one point for a safety check.

Year 11 Outdoor Education

A brave group of Year 11 Outdoor and Environmental Studies students headed up into the alpine environment this week. Students hiked up to Bluff Hut from Refrigerator Gap on Tuesday. We enjoyed a nice sunset but the clouds were ominous from the get go. We awoke on Wednesday to snow on the tents along with wind and rain. We were lucky to be able to shelter in the hut for breakfast then ventured out towards Bluff Summit.

We tried in vain to keep our boots dry but the track had turned into a stream. We made it to the Blowhole and enjoyed the side view of The Bluff along with the driving rain. We sheltered in Bluff Hut for the remainder of the day. We were lucky to escape the rain on the return walk out to Refrigerator Gap.

Congratulations to the group who accepted the challenge and coped admirably with the temperature which ranged from -2 to 3 degrees.

Monash Scholarship

On Thursday night last week I had the honour of representing our school at Monash University as Jarrah Shubsmith received recognition for obtaining a scholarship in Engineering. Jarrah was the Dux of our school in 2018, receiving an ATAR of 96.1. She then applied for and gained a place at Monash University studying a double degree in Engineering and Science. Jarrah gained a monetary scholarship to help her with her studies; she also gained a scholarship for residency so she is able to live on-site and study.

Engineering has historically been a male dominated industry; Monash is aspiring to correct this and aims to have a 50/50 ratio between the sexes. The current Dean, Professor Elizabeth Croft, is working hard to achieve this. Jarrah was one of only 188 recipients of this scholarship. Students from around Australia and in fact the world had applied for these awards. We, as a school, are extremely proud of her and wish her well in her endeavours.

Congratulations Jarrah!

From Mrs Plunkett, the senior team and HHS.
