Junior School

Elevate

Here at Healesville High School, we are committed to providing the best education for every student in our school. We are implementing programs and careers support systems to ensure that individual success is achieved. As part of this, on the 29th of April, all Year 7, 8 and 9 students participated in study skills seminars presented by Elevate Education. This is the second year of a three-year implementation plan to enhance the study and organisation skills of our Junior and Middle School students, so that they are equipped with the knowledge they need to succeed.

Elevate’s study skills seminars are designed to achieve behavioural change amongst students. It isn’t enough that students simply understand what they need to do in their study. The challenge in any study skills program is getting students to use and apply the techniques they learn. Elevate gets students using the strategies from its seminars and workshops by using an integrated process.

In 2018, our current Year 8 and 9 students participated in the ‘Study Skills Kick Start’ presentation and so this year they completed the next level of the Elevate program with the ‘Junior Time Management’ workshop. This looked at positive time management and how to prioritise homework and study requirements whilst maintaining a healthy life balance to reduce stress and increase productivity. The aim of this is to highlight to students that academic success is achievable with a consistent plan in place.

Being new to the school, our current Year 7 students completed the first in the series of sessions; ‘Study Skills Kick Start’. This workshop addresses; transitioning to high school, dynamic reading skills, effective note taking strategies, conceptual learning techniques and independent learning.

HICSA Community Lunch

For the second year, Healesville High School sponsored and catered the Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association (HICSA) community lunch for the month of May. HICSA holds a community lunch once a month, sponsored by various community groups and service providers. Misty Skeene, Lilly Hume, Tamara Commans, Teghan Voce and Natalia Macpherson-Daykin worked tirelessly all day to create a nutritious two course meal for seventy people. The menu consisted of two different kinds of pasta bake, a vegan/vegetarian/gluten free pasta, garden salad, garlic bread and chocolate chip cookie/ice cream sandwiches.

The girls worked exceptionally well as a team and they remained calm all day. Guests were very grateful and the girls received many positive comments about the feast they prepared. They should be proud of their efforts. We are already starting to consider ideas for the next lunch we sponsor!

A big thank-you to Kerry Davies for her outstanding support!
