Sovereign Hill

Student Reflections

Sovereign Hill was a unique experience: a place that offers the experience of the 1850’s without being hurt and/or abused by adults. We learned a useful skill which was actually really fun.

A highlight to me was learning huckerback, because it is a somewhat useful skill that I can show off, and it’s really fun to do. Whilst we were learning huckerback, our teachers were nice and supportive towards our learning of the skill.

I learnt huckerback (as I’ve said in literally all the previous paragraphs), and I learnt how to write in cursive (kind of). We learnt how to smelt gold to be more pure, and how to make fairy drops. Our teacher also taught us how to gold pan effectively. But that was just the skills we learnt. We also learnt how there was a much larger gap between rich and poor. Girls were much less important than boys; girls weren't allowed to even run!

Sovereign Hill was an experience of a life time that I will never forget. It was amazing learning how it was back in the day. I hope many other children like me get to have this experience. The highlight for me was probably the costumes because they were really old fashioned but I still wished girls could run. I learnt that girls don’t get as much respect or education as boys get. I also learnt huckerback. Sovereign Hill was the best.
