A Taste of High School

On Thursday 17th June Year 6 students from across the district came together for the first

of three transition days to get their first experience of high school.

Students were split into two classes one class followed a Mainstream timetable the other spent the day exploring the big picture education model. I followed the mainstream group and they certainly seemed to enjoy their various experiences, especially walking

away with a working game spinner from woodwork. I would like to commend all students for their behaviour, enthusiasm and effort.

The other transition days are currently planned for 26th August and 28th October. There will also be a parent information session coming up in early term three.

Stage 3 Navy- with Mrs Vidler

Last term with Mrs Vidler we learnt about electricity and music, we made circuits trying to get a light to light up and we learnt about beats. This term, we are learning about matter. I have enjoyed talking about the 4th state of matter.

This term with Mrs Vidler, we are learning about dance genres, states of matter and looking at bullying in PDHPE. We have learnt lots so far. Something I really enjoyed doing is exploring science.

Last term we did a big focus on electricity, we learnt how electricity works. We also did an experiment where we had to make a circuit. This term we are going to be focusing on matter. There are four types of matter, solids, liquids, gases and plasma. I'm looking forward to exploring science more this term.

Kindergarten and Big Picture Vs Computers

On Wednesday afternoon, Big Picture 2 came to the Library to help Kindergarten to learn how to log on to a computer. Each Kindy person chose a “big” helper to show them how to use Minecraft or how to use paint. It was really nice to get to know the Kindy kids.

The Premier's Spelling Bee

The Premier’s Spelling Bee was introduced in 2004 as a fun and educational way for NSW public primary school students to engage in spelling. The program includes activities to

encourage all students to improve their vocabulary and spelling and to promote literacy skills in combination with the English K-6 Syllabus.

The Premier's Spelling Bee will be going ahead in 2021 in an altered format to previous year's competitions. In 2021, schools can enter one student in each of the junior and senior competitions.

The Guyra Central School Spelling Bee was held on Monday the 19th of July.

Life Skills Excursion

Last term Indi-Lee, Amelia and Krikit visited the main street to learn more

about the services in our local community. The focus of the visit was to practice making purchases within a number of our local stores. The students assisted staff to use the ATM and bought products using both EFTPOS card and cash. We encouraged each student to look at the prices for the product we wanted to purchase. We then guided them (where needed) to choose the right amount of cash to cover the cost. Each student did a fantastic job communicating with store

staff members whilst being served.

Artwork Selected for Student Exhibition at NERAM

An artwork by GCS student, Dante Lloyd of Yr 10, has been selected to be one among a group of 60 works to be part of the 2021 University of New England School Acquisitive Art Prize (UNESAP) exhibition, ‘Let’s Hang It!’ to held at NERAM, Armidale .

There was a total of 471 art entries to this year's UNESAP competition and these works demonstrated the application of a very high standard of technical skill as well as creative expression. The selection committee commented that there was a wonderful diversity of art media and subject matter represented.

Dante’s artwork, ‘Portrait of Kalvin Phillips’, in acrylic, will feature in the ‘Let’s Hang It!’ exhibition that will run from Friday 30 July 2021 at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) in Armidale. The exhibition will be on display until Sunday 15 August 2021.

Yr 8 Visual Art - Ceramic Sculpture - Marvelous Monstrosities

Yr 8 Visual Arts students have designed and started to construct a ceramic sculpture inspired by a ‘Marvelous Monstrosity’, creatures of the imagination that often have

features derived from machines, aliens or monster myths.

The students’ designs include the incorporation of various distinctive aspects of a creature or monster. In this process, students select and use a variety of processes and techniques within ceramics to communicate aspects of this subject matter in a visual form to an audience.

Students have first created a ‘Marvelous Monstrosity’ design in their Visual Arts Process Diary which are then annotated and refined.

Then students constructed their monstrosity using a polymer strengthened paper clay employing traditional ceramic hand building techniques such that of the pinch pot, scratching and joining and cutting and sculpting by hand.

Big Picture - University of New England Excursion

On Monday 21st June, students toured UNE. The Tour was led by UNE Education Academic Dr Jim White. Students visited the ‘state of the art’ Sport and Athlete Research Centre and the new geothermally heated indoor pool. Students viewed the Natural History Museum featuring skeletal reproductions of rare and extinct dinosaurs and Australian mega fauna. Lunch was provided that included chicken kebabs, sausages and salad. Students had a opportunity to walk around the Booloominbah Historic House, the original residence of the pioneering White family designed in the Arts and Crafts architectural style.

Big Picture Exhibitions

Some of our Big Picture students have been studying some textile techniques during Term 2.

Esther Ashman has been learning how to use an over locker to finish seams and create an elastic waistband. These techniques were used to construct a simple skirt, one with contrast fabric and a gathered skirt. During her exhibition Esther demonstrated her new skills by sewing a seam and finishing it professionally with an over locker. After her exhibition Esther kindly donated her samples to Miss Mitchell’s Kindergarten class.

Wyatt McGinty has been learning how to insert a zip and use applique as a decorating feature. These techniques were used to construct a pocket pillow, decorated with an applique owl sewn onto the pocket of the pillow.

Well done to these students on their final projects.
