PSSA Knockout Classic Shield

On the 22nd of June, the Primary League Football team travelled to Scully Park in Tamworth to compete in the 'PSSA Knockout Classic Shield, North West Finals Gala Day'. The first game was against Gulargambone Central School and Guyra Central School played exceptionally well leading 22-nil at half time. Guyra came back just as strong in the second half only letting Gulargambone score one try. The full-time score 36-4.The second game was against Westdale Public School, both teams played hard and went try for try until the second half when Guyra was obviously affected by the heat and Westdale got a try in the final minutes. The full-time score 22-18 to Westdale. Guyra played for Bronze against Tamworth Public School in their third game, again the heat affected Guyra but this didn't stop them from putting in a competitive performance going try for try. Unfortunately, Tamworth was able to come out on top, winning the match 16-10. All students showed great sportsmanship and really showed the talent Guyra Central School has when it comes to football. It was a huge achievement to come 4th in the North West and students should be proud of their efforts. Students would like to thank Tyson Fiffita and Aid Cameron for coaching, Craig Hutton for helping with subbing, Gina Lockyer for first aid, Miss Fletcher, Eunice, parents and carers for support and travelling to Tamworth.

Under 15s Country Cup Regional Finals Report

By Peter Campbell and Corbi Byers (Year 9 students)

In a great day of regional school boy footy Guyra competed with much larger schools Farrer, Oxley and Gunnedah High Schools in the north west regional finals . Well deserved, it is Farrer  who will progress to  the northern state finals.

Guyra Central 14  v Farrer 18

In a very entertaining and thrilling contest Guyra unfortunately were overcome by a classy

and well drilled Farrer outfit. From the first kick return Guyra showed they were more than a match for Farrer in the middle with barnstorming runs by Prop Peter Campbell. However, some poor unforced handling errors handed Farrer easy field position and overwhelming possession share to race to an 8-nil lead with two well executed tries.

Guyra hit back with a try to Oscar Atkin after being put in the clear by Brodi Campbell and the scores were 8-4 just before halftime. Another silly error early in the tackle count once again gave Farrer easy field position and the Tamworth boarding school went over again to go into a 14-4 lead.

After some stern words from coach Walker at half time the Guyra boys guarded possession and as a result they were rewarded with two tries of their own leveling the scores at 14 points each and more importantly looking the better side as the match drew to a conclusion.

Again after a strong defensive effort to deny Farrer an further points, Guyra once again handed cheap possession back to Farrer and gave them field position to launch a last-ditch attempt to break the deadlock. Farrer once again worked the ball in a controlled manner and were rewarded with a try from dummy half in the corner. Farrer took the lead 18-14.

Guyra came from the field disheartened because they all felt that they had the better of the Farrer team and that if they had held the ball better crucial times they would have won the game.

Guyra Central 12 v Oxley High 24

In a must win contest against Oxley High School, Guyra Started Out strong Gaining a

twelve to nil lead. For the first quarter of the match Guyra aimed up well in defence and made metres in the centre, unfortunately Guyra bagan to make many unforced errors. This gave Oxley field position and possession which which led to Oxley racing in five unanswered tries and ending any hopes of progression in the Country Cup .

Guyra Central 8 v Gunnedah High 22

In the last game of the day Guyra started the match well. They dominated the middle of the field with their middle forwards, leading to two well deserved tries against Gunnedah. After the two tries Guyra got sloppy and once again handed over cheap position to Gunnedah.  Guyra become undisciplined in defence and the glut of Gunnedah possession led the opposition to score twenty-two unanswered points to leave Guyra winless for the day.

A word from Coach Walker

It is unfortunate that the Guyra boys came away winless from the regional finals. At 14 all with Farrer (who went through on the day ) with five minutes to go and all the momentum, I thought for a minute that the boys were going to win the day. However, we learnt a lesson that you cannot expect to win games against well drilled teams with set completion rates of less than 50%. All 3 games today Guyra put themselves in winning positions, but it was not to be. The 2021 Country Cup campaign this year has seen victories over Armidale Secondary College, O’Connor Catholic College, Inverell High School and MacIntyre High School. Overall, it's been a great success and I am really proud of the effort the boys put into their footy.

Hopefully we can progress to the State Finals in the Small Schools Cup.
