NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week has once again brought us together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year’s theme: Heal Country! Calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction. The theme invites the nation to embrace First Nations cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia’s national heritage, and to equally respect the cultures and values of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as they do the cultures and values of all Australians. Heal Country, heal our nation. It invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country—a history that dates back thousands of generations.
This year at Guyra Central School we celebrated NAIDOC week during week 1 and 2 this term.
All Student from k-12 participated in various activities throughout 2 weeks. The activities were:
Kindergarten – Scratch Art
Years 1 and 2 – Door Hangers
Years 3 and 4 – Iron Beads
Years 5 and 6 – Cooking Damper
Years 7 and 8 – Designing Emu Eggs
Years 9 and 10 - Designing an Australian animal magnet
Years 11 and 12 – Designing your own Aboriginal Art (Canvas)
All the students who participated in the activities did an amazing job. A special thanks needs to go out to all the Teachers, SLSO’s who ran the activities and to the Junior AECG students who helped with the activities in the Primary School.
NAIDOC awards were given to two students from each Class in the Primary School and Year groups/Big Picture groups in the High School. The awards were given to students who have been doing amazing work throughout the year. Students in the High School and Primary School received a certificate and an Indigenous drink bottle. A special thanks to the office ladies who helped out with the organisation.
Leading up to NAIDOC week K-12 students participated in an Indigenous Jersey design. There were fantastic entries and the panel of judges found it hard to pick winners. We’d like to congratulate all the participants and the winners of the Indigenous Jersey design Competition.
We finished off the week on Friday with a morning tea with all the staff and Junior AECG with a beautiful cake.
Thanks once again to all the staff and students who helped out leading up to NAIDOC week and during the week with all the activities. Look forward to celebrating NAIDOC Week in 2022.

For the pat two weeks, Kindergarten have celebrated NAIDOC Week by reading Dreaming
books, learning what NAIDOC stands for and learning about Aboriginal culture. Last week students learnt about Uluru and created Uluru artwork. This week they enjoyed completing ‘scratch art’ of native Australian animals.
Guyra Cental Schools AECG students joined our whole school staff morning tea on Friday 23rd July 2021. Year 9 student, Keith Landsborough commenced our NAIDOC week morning tea with 'Welcome to Country'. Leigha McElroy and Jada Alefosio addressed the morning tea talking about the 2021 NAIDOC week theme 'Heal Country' before all the AECG committee joined together to cut the cake.
Thank you to Miss Eunice Blair, Miss Amy Pixton and all the AECG Committee for all of your work in organising our 2021 NAIDOC celebrations.
