Performing Arts

This week in performing arts, we have been recognising Sorry Day and Reconciliation week by learning to sing songs from Jessie Lloyd's 'Mission Songs Project'. Jessie Lloyd is and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musician who has travelled Australia collecting songs that were sung by Indigenous Peoples during the mission era. The prep/grade one students learnt to sing one of these songs, entitled 'Down In The Kitchen'. This song used to be sung by Indigenous children on Palm Island.

You can watch prep/grade 1 J/L singing the song:

'Down in the kitchen,

where we all eat,

potato and pumpkin,

 and sometimes some meat.

 Tea is so watery, '

no sugar at all,

 damper is doughy,

stick to my rib. '
