Applied Learning - VCAL/VET

Mr Justin Summons, Applied Learning Leader

With a huge Term 1 of Applied learning completed the VCAL students are gaining momentum and demonstrating their competency for their Learning outcomes.  The Year 11 and 12 VCAL students wrapped up Term 1 by immersing themselves in the outdoors.  As this aligns well with our college them “everything is interconnected”, the students were able to work towards demonstrating their learning outcomes in an outdoor setting.

The Year 11 Camp was based at Shoreham Foreshore Campsite, where the rain fell but spirits were high as the students kayaked, surfed, hiked, biked, cooked and slept their way through a very successful camp.

The Year 12 camp was based at Point Leo Foreshore camping grounds. This time the weather was more favourable the two nights we spent in around the Mornington Peninsula.  As the Year 12s are working towards their Senior VCAL they hand more of a planning and leading role in how the camp activities were run.

All in all the VCAL students who participated in the camp were seen to grow in maturity and connection with the outdoors.

Camp Point Leo Reflection

By Irene

Firstly, we got out of the bus and was shown the bathroom. Then had a meeting regarding setting up the tents.  The tent was hard to set but Mr Mountford came and helps us set a tent. We then had a meeting about our first activity which was taking photos as we walked to the beach.

Furthermore, I felt nervous and scared at the first place, but I got strong feeling that everything will be good, and I felt great.  I did not miss any activities I try my best because I might not have that kind of opportunity again and I did all the activities without fear in me, I found it really excited and interesting.

I found the activities challenging, but with a lot courage I participated in all activities.  I got to do surfing first, I thought was hard, but I try my best and was able to stand up multiple times. There was nothing bad when I did all the activities, it was really enjoyable and fun.

In conclusion, I would like to do all the activities again and build on my experience to improve for the future; especially surfing I would like to learn more of as well as riding a bike. The food was really good and I got to eat food that I have never eaten before, it was so great tying new food.
