Aerobics

On Saturday 20 August, 19 Killara High School students travelled to the Gold Coast to compete in the TFT National School Aerobics Competition. The group excitedly started their tour at Sydney Airport where they flew up to Coolangatta on the Saturday morning. After a long day of travelling, we arrived at our hotel in Surfers Paradise and commenced training in preparation for the next day’s competition.

The day of competition was long and drawn out with each of the three teams competing at different times of the day. Up first was Team Pizzazz (Jade M, Megan A, Kayla L, Tara P, Jack W, Roni G, Alyssa L), made up of Year 11 and Year 12 students. Pizzazz were the reigning champions from last year. However, competition much fiercer this year with 14 teams in their division. The team put on an outstanding performance and received special mentions from the event convenor ‘as her favourite performance’. The team eventually came away with a bronze medal scoring 88.57 only 2 points behind first and second place.

Next up was Team Flames, (Tali S, Alex P, Phoebe S, Alice M, Mischa W, Elise P) made up again of Year 11 and 12 students. This was the first time all members of the team were able to compete on stage due to illness. The team qualified for Nationals through the repechage system as a member of the team had COVID during State Qualifiers. The team were recognised by the convenor for their hard work and dedication to make it to Nationals through this system. The team displayed incredible strength throughout their difficult routine and placed in the top 10 of the division.

Last up for the day at 5.00pm, was our Year 10 Team Shimmers (Isabella N, Stephani S, Kayla B, Bianca P, Lucinda R, Melanie L). This year was the first time members of this team were able to take the stage after two years of online competition. The nerves were high. They had also been placed in the senior division and were competing against other teams consisting of Year 11 and 12 students. The team displayed excellent synchronicity and flexibility and achieved a personal best score for the season. They also placed in the top 10 of their division.

Congratulations to all the students involved and a big thank you to Mr Currie for giving up his weekend to accompanying the group and Ms Muller on the tour.
