Killara School Partnership

On Monday the 15 August, we invited 50 excited Year 3 students from Killara, Lindfield and Roseville Public Schools into our science laboratories. The day began with gasps of awe as students saw green fire shoot from a large flask at the front of the classroom.

Supported by our Year 8 leaders, each group of 4 students manipulated equipment to conduct some experiments. First, they made lava lamps using gas jars and watched as bubbles of colour floated up through oil and sank back down.

Next, they prepared a reaction in a bag, that they observed as it changed colour, went hot, then cold and expanded with air. Lastly, we carried out a chemical reaction in food. There were more than a few shrieks when the students mixed citric acid with bicarbonate soda, felt them bubble as these compounds are the main components of sherbet.

We repeated this workshop equally successfully on Wednesday 24 August with Year 3 students from Beaumont Road, Gordon East and Lindfield East Public Schools mentored by our wonderful Year 8 students from Killara High School.

All in all, it's safe to say the teachers, Year 3 students and Killara High School student leaders had a great time. We are looking forward to seeing Year 4 girls in a few months.

A big thank you to Ms Lou, Ms Aryan, Mr Aubusson and Mr Koefoed.
