Open Boys Soccer

On Friday 22nd March, Lake Illawarra High School open boys soccer travelled to Ian McLennan Park at Kembla Grange to play Wollongong Performing Arts High School in the Round 1 match of the knockout tournament.

It was always going to be a challenge as WPAHS held the title from 2018, however, the boys put together patches of play where they proved to be competitive. With a good mix of year 7-12 students, we were unfortunately beaten on the day, though not through lack of effort.

All the boys put in and should be commended on their level of sportsmanship, however, special mention should go to Luke Cataldo and Adam Young on the field who didn't stop running all game. Also, Justin Costa in goals, who proved to be a crowd favourite making a number of challenging saves.

Illawarra Zone Basketball Competition

On Wednesday 13th March, our senior boy’s basketball team travelled to Berkeley Sports High School for the Zone basketball competition. The squad had only recently been formed; however, the boys developed some quick chemistry during our training sessions here at school. There was plenty of positive ball movement and good shooting on display by our players. Andre Tauteka and Marley Fletcher were excellent pulling in rebounds.

Robbie Hodgson, Thomas Jolliffe and Christian Milevski did a great job moving the ball and helping out on defence. Jake Davis, Jonah Miles and Deegan Page demonstrated some great shooting and confidently work their way through the oppositions defence. Unfortunately, we lost both games but built plenty of confidence in the second game versus Albion Park High School with the final score 27-61. Basketball is alive at Lake Illawarra!

Junior Cricket (Cassatt Cup) Review

On the 6th of March took the junior boys cricket side to Reed Park, Dapto for two T20 cricket matches. The games were played in good spirit with the boys representing our school admirably.

1st match vs. Dapto High School (Cricket)

The game couldn’t have started any better for the Lake, with Justin Costa clean bowling the opening batsmen from Dapto with the 1st ball of the morning. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals, with Justin Costa and Robbie Hodgson being the best bowlers on the day. We were set 120 for victory which proved just too much with our boys managing 78 runs in reply. Robbie Hodgson capped off a fine day by top scoring with the bat on 20*.

Our 2nd match against Warilla High School was called off due to poor weather conditions.

Senior Cricket Davidson Shield Review 16/3/19

After our 1st round victory against Oak Flats High School (forfeit) we had an away game against Moss Vale High School at the picturesque Centennial Park, Bowral. We fielded quiet a young team and were always going to be at long odds to come away with a victory. Moss Vale scored 300 runs, with Robbie Hodgson claiming figures of 5/27 which is amazing considering he was 2 years younger than anyone on the opposition team. Unfortunately, we were all out for 80 runs with the bat. Best players on the day were Robbie Hodgson, Michael Tully, Luke Cataldo and Connor Healey. All of the boys are eligible to play senior cricket next year so was a good learning experience.

Under 16s Girls AFL

Our under 16’s played 3 matches of modified AFL at Towradgi Park, Wollongong. None of the girls had every played AFL before, and they did their school proud.

Our 1st match was against Kiera High School. We were definitely the better side, however some inaccurate goal kicking, and still getting used to the rules saw Lake Illawarra just lose 8-4. Our next two games against Nowra and Bulli High School saw heavier defeats, but we were playing against girls who had experience with the sport and more numbers then us.

The girls really enjoyed the experience, and never gave up, refusing to come off the field when injured as they didn’t want to let their teammates down who were already playing short. I’m confident some of these girls will consider playing AFL out of school. Best players on the day were Brianna Ratcliff, Amber O’Neill, Ria Twyford, Tanaya Sharrock and Keiarn Fletcher.

Boys and Girls Futsal

On the 13th and 14th April, Lake Illawarra High’s Futsal teams participated in the Football South Coast Futsal Championships at Illawarra Sports Stadium. We had an under 14s and under 16s boys team, and two under 16 girls teams. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their futsal skills in a competitive forum versing other schools in the south coast region, whilst having fun playing alongside their peers.

All teams played with heart and enthusiasm, despite some unfortunate defeats. However, our under 16s girls A-team won all of their games, which then put them into the quarter-finals where they lost by only a 2 goal difference! All-in-all it was a successful day and we look forward to improving for next year.
