Principal's Message

One of the great things about Lake Illawarra High is the opportunities that our students have to pursue their passions, whether its in their studies through our partnership with UOW, on the sporting field, in leadership or in the arts.

This is exemplified with our students involvement with the Royal Easter Show in Sydney. Once again we have been chosen to represent the Illawarra/ South Coast Region in promoting Agriculture in the region at the show and I must acknowledge the wonderful efforts of Mrs Micheel Atkinson and Mrs Trudi Voorwinden and the students involved for the magnificent display that they have produced. I am sure that they will go very close to winning this category yet again.

We have also had a large number of sporting teams participating in a whole range of different sports. Well done to every student who has represented our school......your behaviour and sportsmanship has been of the highest level.

Our student leaders for 2019/2020 will also be chosen in the next week. Those who are nominating are currently completing their nominations and will be addressing the whole school this Monday with their speeches....best of luck to our candidates. I must thank our outgoing leaders Brittany Skeen, Lucy Coyle, Samantha Gibbs and Jackson Valk for the tremendous leadership that they have displayed over the last 12 months.....you will be missed!

Finally, can I please ask all parents and caregivers to set aside Thursday 11 April from 2.30pm to 6pm as we will be holding our first Parent /Teacher afternoon. This will be for all students from years 7 -12 and will be a great opportunity to discuss your youngsters progress with their teachers and to also look at ways we can work together to support them throughout the year.

Warmest regards

Deputies' Desk

We have been enjoying an amazing term of teaching and learning with many exciting activities underway. Last week we held our school Cross country carnival where our kids could enter into the competitive or non-competitive event and it was great to see our kids out there enjoying themselves as they completed their events.  A very big thank you to Mr Chaseling and the PE team and students helpers for their efforts on the day and a big well done and thank you to the many students who attended and competed.

Next term we will be launching the ‘Parent Portal’ on our Sentral reporting system. The parent portal is a way for you to stay in touch with your child’s learning journey. We will be trailing this with our year 7 group and will expand to the other year groups as the system develops. The modules we are trailing in term 2 will allow you to see attendance data for the day, this includes the period by period attendance, your child’s timetable, messages by staff to the kids regarding upcoming events here at Lake (which is very handy if the kids forget to give you the information notes!), as well as their mid-term and yearly reports.

We will be handing out to the students in week 1 next term instructions regarding how to create a user profile. We hope that this system will be used by our parent group and further connect school and home as we work together to support our kids.

Can I please ask parents to remind their children of cyber safety and the importance of staying safe on-line. The same rules for stranger danger apply on line as they do in person.

Young adults need regular reminders not to engage, or share information with people they do not actually know. Some apps encourage this sort of 'networking', but it can prove to be very risky business. We cover this learning at school, but the message is strengthened when it comes from home also.

Thank you to the many parents I have worked with this term. It is terrific when we can work together to secure positive learning and wellbeing outcomes for the young adults in our community. If at any time you wish to contact myself or Mr Meizer, you can do so by calling the school.
