Marysville Adventure

Our Year Nines headed off to camp in Marysville in the second week of Term Three. After arriving on Monday, students got straight into some initiative skill games and bush skills. Later that day they had to create their own campfire and after some struggle, the students managed to create a beautiful warm fire, largely thanks to the 'fire master', Braydi. As a reward for their efforts, students earned themselves the chance to sit around the campfire roasting marshmallows.

Tuesday saw the students take a picturesque hike up to Steavenson Falls, which required them to use their navigation skills. This was followed by a visit to the Marysville Bushfire Museum to learn about the tragedy of the 2009 Black Saturday Fires. The day concluded with a Trivia Night, which was won by the trivia team, ‘All Hail Alcaraz,’ made up of Annie, Jolie, Nic and Rylee.

Wednesday was Snow Day, with students hitting the slopes at Lake Mountain. All students had the opportunity to ski, toboggan and even throw snowballs! Lyncon won the great toboggan race, while Abi showed her skills on the skis and some declared they were better suited to snowboarding. After an extremely fun day, there came the high stakes test of 'cabin inspections'. These were so rigorous that even the students inspected Mr. Webb, Mr. Green, and Miss Blackburn’s cabins. Cabin Four, containing Tom, Errol, Nathan, Tucker, Kaiden and Rylee managed to take out the coveted prize of cleanest cabin!

Thursday was the day on which all had a real opportunity to push themselves and expand their comfort zones. Mr. Schier was good enough to rise early and join us for the day, which began with mountain bike riding. For some, the challenge was just getting on the bike, while for others, it was the ride into town. A few struggled with the descent down the mountain and one person in particular had issues with the CHALLENGE puddle. After throwing on a dry set of clothes, it was then time to tackle abseiling and the rock-climbing wall. Many students showed true bravery, pushing themselves further than they thought they could go. That night was games night, with many laughs had over card games, Monopoly and Family Feud.

By Friday, it was time to head home. After a deflating start, where it was discovered the Marysville Lolly Shop was closed, spirits lifted when everyone enjoyed a hearty lunch and a run around in Kilmore. The final stop before home was Creswick, where students played their final game of ‘Bang’.

Thanks to Middle Years Coordinator, Mr. de Zeoete-Spiero, for organising the camp, Miss Blackburn, Mr. Webb and Mr. Green for being there all week and Mr Schier for travelling up and back on Thursday. It was a fantastic week had by all!
