Walk to School October: SFX Morning Laps Club
WE ARE LOVING THE NEW OVAL!!
Students, siblings and parents have been coming out in droves for ‘Walk to School October’ on our new oval. How fantastic that since the first week of term, we have seen huge numbers out walking and running the track each morning! The wonderful warm weather has been great incentive to get the day off to a great start. As has the introduction of the ‘Golden Sneaker’ Award!!
The ‘Golden Sneaker’ Award is awarded to the class with the most number of walks in a week (as a percentage, based on number of students). Competition between the classes has stepped up a notch since being announced as senior students have attempted to stay on top of the junior grades in the standings.
A reminder that students are invited each morning to get active on the track 8:30 - 8:50 am (weather permitting) under SFX staff supervision. This will continue through until the 1st November, when the ‘Walk to School’ promotion finishes. Laps around the track will count towards each student’s tally for walking to (or at) school! Come early & walk together!
***Golden Sneaker Award***
Last whole school assembly the inaugural presentation was made to the first winning class who managed to get every student out walking, ….. Congratulations to 1MH!!
This week’s winner of the ‘Golden Sneaker’ Award is ……. 3TH!!! Love the competition!
Regional Athletics - Congratulations to Archie Richards, 3LB
Sincere congratulations to Archie Richards, who competed at the Northern Metro Regional Athletics Carnival last week. He competed in both the 1500m event as well as Long Jump. Advancing through our District and qualifying at the Divisional level, Archie finished with an amazing result in both events: 1500m BRONZE and in the Long Jump event, 6th position!! This has been an incredible effort by Archie and an amazing result for this mighty Year Three student.
CONGRATULATIONS to Archie on his success in Athletics and thank you for representing St Francis Xavier School.
District Lacrosse Gala Day 2019
‘What a GREAT day!’
Last Friday 18th October, SFX sent 45 students (5 teams) from Year Three to Six to participate in the Lacrosse Gala Day at Eltham Lower Park. The Gala Day included 24 teams across three divisions from schools in Eltham and Montmorency. The students had such a great day, competing in 8 matches across the day, with some of our students playing the sport for the first time. While not everyone came up winners, everyone walked away with smiles. Our SFX 1 team, competing in the highest division, ‘Panthers’, finished the day undefeated and grand final winners. This qualifies the team to progress on to the State Lacrosse Final in December. Congratulations to all of our students who participated on their good sport attitude and team place as well as their resilience in trying something new.
‘School of Smiles’ Visiting SFX
Next week the Banyule Community Health ‘School of Smiles’ team will be visiting our school. Classes in Prep to Year Three will engage in a dental health education session as part of our Health & Physical Education program. The session will focus on dental hygiene and sugary drinks consumption, which is timely with warmer weather.
Interschool Sport DIVISION Finals
Congratulations to our Year Five/Six sport teams who played in the Division Finals last week and today: Boys/Mixed Basketball, Girls Basketball, Boys/Mixed Volleyball, Girls Volleyball, Mixed Tennis.
Our Girls Basketball team narrowly missed out after defeating Glen Katherine in double overtime then losing to Eltham North Primary in back-to-back games. The girls ran hard in both games and played some terrific team basketball, putting passes straight onto the hands of their teammates - terrific effort!
Our Mixed Tennis team came up against some very polished tennis teams in their division competition. After some very close matches, and giving their best, the team fell a little shy of the mark. The growth in their play and the responsible behaviour of this team all season has been nothing short of impressive, particularly in our first ever Hot Shots Interschool Sport season. Thank you and well done to the tennis team.
Our Boys Basketball team played an exciting three-way competition today against Laurimar and Eltham East Primary at Eltham College. The boys were well organised and team focused from the start as they shared the ball well, ran hard on defence and backed each other on every occasion. In their first game, SFX had a very convincing win of 48-19 against Laurimar, finishing up with all players scoring. In the ‘grand final’ against a strong and quick Eltham East team, the boys stayed in control of the ball and tempo an entire 30 minutes, sharing the ball around and playing a very strong full-court press. They were rewarded with a good win, 50-31. Every player should be commended for bringing their best on the day and supporting each other so well. Once again, every player scored, our smallest player ripped down rebounds and Sam Baldwin shot the lights out with FOUR successful 3-pointers! At the conclusion of the game, the team voted Caden Watts as ‘Man of the Match’ after playing his best game of the season; pulling down rebounds, boxing out, rejecting shots and sprinting the full court to finish a fastbreak lay-up. Well done Caden!
Today’s win qualifies the boys to advance to the Northern Metro Regional Finals. This will be played on Tuesday 29th October at Mill Park Stadium, 9:30-12:30. Big congratulations and good luck to the Boys Basketball team!
The Boys Volleyball team lost in straight sets to Eltham College, then won in straight sets to Apollo Parkways. Both games were very close, very competitive and played in good spirit. In a 3 way tie, the team had to play a 6 point decider to get a result and SFX lost to Eltham college. Great team effort, especially keeping your positive attitude when your team was down, helping your team to get back into the game.
The Girls Volleyball lost to Eltham North in the first round after playing a third set decider. Against Diamond Creek East, they lost a very close first set, made a comeback in the second set thanks to fantastic teamwork and effort. Unfortunately, they could not beat Diamond Creek East who were a very strong team and the overall winners for the day. The girls were so proud of how far their skills had developed, particularly today. They were most excited about the incredible crowd support received by the girls from Eltham North. They had a really fun time, happy to have made it into the Division Finals and the positive experience they achieved together.
Congratulations and well done to all of our teams on such a tremendous effort!
