Junior School Sport

Junior AFL

We came up against a strong St Peter’s team, who showed their knowledge and dominance in the first half scoring 8-0. In the second half, St Greg’s composed themselves and set up with strong defensive efforts, which stopped St Peter’s moving the ball with ease. Special mentions go to Denham Tsagalas, Noah McKinnon, Ivy Smith and Sabah Paki, who displayed great offensive and defensive skills that made a great impact on the game.

In the final quarter, we had our chances to score but we had some very unlucky bounces that scored as behinds. We, unfortunately, lost the game by 2 goals, with the final score being 15-3.

Great effort team!!! Although you did not get the win, I am really impressed with the continuous encouragement that was given to each other. It was evident this assisted each player to grow with confidence as the game went on!! We, unfortunately, had 2 players unavailable to play on the day but you did not allow that to deter you from playing hard and implement the skills that we worked on for many weeks.

As a team, we will regroup and build upon what we learnt from the game, as we look forward to versing St Peter’s again in week 4.

Newcomb Ball

The team for Newcomb Ball have spent a number of weeks training and looking forward to the opportunity of playing another team from another school. Today we had the opportunity to play St Peter’s. They were excited and enthusiastic about competing against another school. They played 2 sets and St Greg’s won the first and St Peter’s won the second. Due to time restraints, we didn’t get to start the third set.

They were supportive and encouraged each other as the game progressed. As a team, we need to work on a few areas of the game. They are all looking forward to when we play St Peter’s again in week 4.

Junior Netball

The inaugural St Gregory’s Junior Netball team, celebrated our 4-1 win in our first friendly match against St Peter’s with three cheers for our opposition and umpires. The teams were well matched with a mix of seasoned players and beginners, and we soon got into the swing of the game, passing with flair and finesse. Special mentions go to the shooting team of Chloe Carino and Joya Zakhary who worked the circle scoring two goals each. The defence was impressive, with quite a few intercepts and turnovers in the goal third made by Lucy Stewart, Tayah Bowen and Ruby Isbister. We will be building our knowledge rules and working on passing and footwork in Week 3, in anticipation of our next friendly game versus St Peter’s Week 4. Go Gregs!

Junior Boys Soccer

What an incredible game!

St Greg’s scored a goal in the last minute bringing the game to a draw. The boys played an incredibly good game and showed excellent defensive skills in the second half. It was pleasing to see the boys work together when passing the ball on the field. Our first goal of the match was by Zane Mallinson followed by Luke Ormerod, what a goal to score on his last day at the College! Joseph Issa followed through in the second half taking possession and scoring another goal.

The score was 3-4 St Peter’s way… in the last-minute Zane Mallinson scored the final goal of the match bringing the game to a 4-4 Draw.

The team will continue training next week, in preparation for our next match in Week 4 against St Peter’s!

St Greg’s 24 def St Peter’s 21. How exciting!!!! The team started off with a win after many weeks of training. It was great to see the team work well together, as they were able to share the workload both in defence and in attack. Well done to Kye Penfold who kicked multiple goals, Courtney Dejaresco who used her speed in attack to break away from defenders and finally to Ben Dean with his clean use of the ball.

Congratulations on the win!!! The next couple of weeks at training we will be focusing on how we can finish the game stronger than what we did this week.

Volleyball

This week our Senior Volleyball Team was so excited to finally take to the court. After lots of training sessions they were keen to put their skills to the test.   St Peter’s were just as enthusiastic.

The first set opened with some powerful serving on our behalf.  After some terrific rallies, the set was extremely tight, but we won 27 – 25 points.

St Peter’s came out strong in the second set and both teams were impressive in attack and defence. It was anyone’s set as the lead continually changed point by point.  Due to time restraints, the game was called early with both teams winning one set each and ending in a draw.

St Greg’s put on an impressive and promising performance for our first game.

Senior Netball

Winners are grinners! What a fantastic first game of netball. The improvement of the skills as the game progressed was unmistakable. Players were mindful of their footwork, looked before they threw the ball and called for the ball when they were free. Towards the end we had some beautiful passages of play from one end of the court to the other. The attacking was speedy, the defence strong and the enthusiasm high. Well done to all players. I am one impressed coach! St Greg’s 19 - St Peter’s 11.

Senior Boys Soccer

The Senior Boys’ Soccer Team had a great game against St. Peter’s. It was a lopsided affair with St. Gregory’s the better team in every aspect of the game. The St Gregory’s boys played very well as a team and dominated the game but were very conscious of not humiliating the opposition. As the game progressed and the goal scoring flowed from the home team, we decided to reduce the numbers playing on the field to offer St. Peter’s a more competitive atmosphere. The final score was 13-0 to St. Gregory’s, with hat tricks scored by 4 separate players. We look forward to playing St. Peter’s again later in the term.
