Interschools Tennis Tournament

On the October long weekend, Declan Byrum and Montell Muiruri were given the opportunity to compete in the Interschools Tennis Tournament at Cintra Park, Auburn. The boys competed in various individual and team events against Waverley, Newington, Port Hacking and Tempe High School.

The competition was fierce and both Declan and Montell did extremely well to win 4 matches. As a result, they received a ball carrier which they generously donated to the College Tennis Team. Declan and Montell are to be congratulated on representing the College with pride.

SPORT REPORT

Term 4 Summer Sports selections have now been finalised with students attending their first week of summer sport last week. Students are reminded to check the Daily Notices for the latest sport information and to ensure they bring all their required sports gear for the Thursday afternoon.

A reminder as we move into Term 4 Summer Sports that all students will be required to supply their College hat and water bottle for Thursday sport. Sunscreen will be provided to students who request it as we aim to create awareness and protection against the summer weather.

The MCS Principals convened earlier this week and have made a decision regarding MCS Sporting competitions in Term 4. Both MCS Basketball and Cricket seasons will commence in Week 5 under strict COVID-19 guidelines. This will mean modified draws will be constructed to accommodate all Colleges.

From this meeting the following guidelines will be adopted for MCS Basketball:

  • Players only permitted inside venues. No spectators for any games.
  • Students are not to mingle with opposing students/year groups before or after games.
  • Students must have their own water bottles, towels and must not share/use other students’ equipment.
  • Teams are to space themselves on the bench and during team talks during halftime and timeouts.
  • Students are to limit celebratory actions such as high fives, chest bumps etc throughout games.
  • No student pickup will be permitted. Students are to use the College transport provided.
  • Two timeslots will be used. 1pm for Years 8/9/10 teams. 2pm for 1st and 2nd Grade teams. This will assist with the non-mixing of students from different cohorts from different regions.
  • Teams from the 1pm games will not be allowed to spectate. Students will need to return to the College on the transport provided or for local games, leave directly from the venue.
  • Teams from the 2pm timeslot – will depart from the College later in preparation for their 2pm start. Students to return to the College or leave from the venue.
  • A College COVID-19 official will be appointed to enforce these rules at each home game. Students are asked to abide by these guidelines to the best of their ability and in a polite and respectful manner.

From this meeting the following guidelines will be adopted for MCS Cricket:

  • Any parent watching cricket is to remain inside their car at all times. Under no circumstances are parents to mix with the student group.
  • No students should be sharing equipment for cricket.
  • There is to be NO spitting on the ball or using body fluids to shine the ball. Students can shine the ball on their clothing but MUST NOT use body fluids to shine the ball.
  • Where possible the keeper should throw the ball to the bowler to walk back to his mark to bowl. Limiting the number of hands touching the ball.
  • As we cannot totally guarantee the cleanliness of public toilets at Council grounds, it is advised students use College facilities before and after games.
  • Students are asked to abide by these guidelines to the best of their ability and in a polite and respectful manner.

Australian Schoolboy Cup – Quarter Final vs Patrician Brothers Blacktown

Last week, our Rugby League team went into the game as underdogs, up against an imposing Blacktown team who boast many high representative players and have been in the top 3 sides in the State for many years.

Unfortunately, to start the game we were without our five-eighth Ward, fullback Fitzsimmons, utility Aslan, and front-rower Rapattoni, 4 players who offer a lot of creativity and leadership. However, bringing in some young players to debut is what it is also all about and being able to adapt and play for the jersey as Ms Burke said in her jersey presentation speech.

Blacktown played a very polished game with minimal mistakes going up 12-0 after 10 minutes. Our boys finally got their head in the game, pressuring their line for 10 minutes and we made it 12-10 with tries to Lindsay Munro and Liam Sutton. Our boys definitely had the belief they could give this competition a shake. Unfortunately, we lost our momentum in the last 5 minutes of the half and switched off defensively to be down 22-10 at halftime.

Coming out we knew we had to be first to score, we went close on multiple occasions which could have changed the direction of the rest of the game. Unfortunately, we let one moment change the game, allowing their hooker to go up the middle and create a big break with some offloads and outrageous kicks to score a try against the run of play.

The boys couldn’t wrangle back the momentum from the powerful Blacktown team who had their tails up and we conceded a few tries in the middle of the second half. We got back up though and put on a couple of quick tries to Raiden Crowe and Liam Sutton again to give ourselves the slimmest of chances at 40-22. With some injuries throughout the game, our boys just couldn’t bring it home and gave up a couple of tries towards the end making the final score 52-22 in a tough loss.

Well done to the Players’ player, Liam Sutton with two tries and tough defensive efforts.

Thank you to everyone that supported the boys through the tough year! Thank you to the staff that helped the boys get ready and have the opportunity to put that jersey on again. Thank you to Lifestyle and Sports Physiotherapy for providing Jake Lombardo for our campaign helping the boys on game day.

Most importantly, thank you and well done to the boys who showed pride in the jersey and tried all year at training not knowing if they would get to play or not!

Co-Curricular Activities

It is that time of the year again when our College sport and co-curricular activities roll over to another year. Even with COVID-19 severely hindering our participation in so many sports and activities, the College will finalise individual and House points so we can acknowledge students for their efforts throughout the year.

If parents can log onto their child’s Sentral portal and check to see if their Co-Curricular activities are accurate for this current calendar year. If there are any errors or oversights, please contact the College to have this changed before the end of year assemblies.
