College Sport

Nikki Stuart

Thank you to all the students and parent/carers that have signed up to play, coach, manage, umpire, car pool and support school sport this term.  After-school sport is now up and running.

Secondary Volleyball started on Monday, Year 9/10 Soccer and the Sailing Course on Tuesday and Year 7/8 Soccer kicked off yesterday. This afternoon, two Secondary Cricket teams will kit up and we will have five teams running out in the JSSATIS Soccer roster.  Twelve secondary students have been helping with soccer training at lunchtime so they are ready to go.  It is fantastic to see so many teams representing the College.  Good luck to everyone participating!

In team sport, your team mates are relying on you.  If a commitment has been made to a team, there is an expectation to attend all trainings and games.  Please keep Team Managers/Coaches or I informed if anything changes and your child can no longer participate or will miss games. This is the key to making sure there is always enough players for games to proceed.

Primary and Early Years Swimming Carnival

Well done to the students that participated in the Swimming Carnival at the Clarence Aquatic Centre on Monday.  Thank you also to the parents that assisted on the day.  It was wonderful to be able to have all year groups from Prep again this year and to be able to have spectators attend and cheer on the competitors.  The final result saw Carmel the winners in a very close contest with 436 points, followed by Loreto (423 points) and Lourdes (366 points).

Swimming Champions and the interschool swimming team will be announced shortly.

Secondary Volleyball

The SSATIS Volleyball roster has again been extremely popular with students.  Mount Carmel has four teams competing, with teams from Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 9/10.  The 7/8 roster has 12 teams, and the Year 9-12 roster has 18 teams split into two pools.

Last week, Kai from Volleyball Tasmania visited the College to take the Year 7 students through the basics.  Then it was straight into their first game on Monday.  They all had a laugh and a good time and once they shook the initial nerves, they had a competitive streak. The team battled through their first game against Collegiate, but continued to learn and improve and did an amazing job to defeat Southern Christian College in the second game, showing great team work and excitement.

The Year 8 teams were dominate in their first games, defeating both teams, without dropping a set. They all played very well! Both teams in the Year 9-12 roster also had great games, enjoying their strong rallies and service wins.  It’s a bit tougher playing on a full court against Guilford Young Year 11/12 students this season, but I’m confident they will show improvement in the coming weeks as they adapt.
