Interschool Sport

Well done to the senior and intermediate boys football teams and the intermediate girls netball teams who all competed last week. The senior boys competed in tough conditions against Catherine McCauley college, and the intermediate teams played against Brauer and Emmanuel Colleges. Each team competed at their max, with the netballers falling just short in the grand final and the intermediate footballers also coming very close to a winning result at the end of the day.

We also had some success competing in basketball and soccer events last week. Our senior boys and intermediate girls soccer teams have qualified for the next GWR round to be held in Ballarat. At the basketball the inter boys and the inter girls also qualified for the next GWR round on the 1st of August. Congratulations to the successful teams! Huge thank you to all the coaches who lead the teams and any students who umpired and helped ensure the smooth running of the events.

Cross Country

On Monday the 3rd of June our students represented Warrnambool College at the Greater Western Region cross country event held at Deakin University. The students competed against other schools in their respective age groups ranging from 12-13 to 17-20 years. Every student gave their all on a damp and slippery track which featured some tough hills and uneven terrain. Congratulations to the 16 year old girls athletes who’s results earned the college first place in the age group. The 14 years boys and 17-20 years girls also earned second places in their age groups. Special congratulations for top 5 finishes goes to Jaiden Wells who placed 5th in the 12-13 years boys, Lily Johnson who placed 2nd in the 16 years girls, Stella Bridgewater who placed 1st in the 17-20 years girls and Logan McLeod who placed 5th in the 17-20 years boys. The full list of results can be found on the compass event and a list of athletes that have qualified for states will be available in the coming days.

Intermediate Girls Netball

Our year 9 and 10 girls represented Warrnambool College in the Inter-school netball on Wednesday 5th June, competing against Emmanuel and Brauer College.

Our year 9 team, coached by student Tara Elliott competed strongly against year 10 teams, making it through to the semi final, losing to our year 10 team, coached by Kasey Owen. Our year 10 team made it to the Grand Final, but unfortunately went down to Emmanuel by 6 points. The girls played hard, through illness and injury. They did so well in the circumstances. Player of the day was Isabella Baker.

Well done to all the girls who represented our school on the day!

Match Report:

Warrnambool College Senior Boys Bullants v Catherine McAuley College

In cold but pretty good conditions with a 2 to 3 goal breeze going toward the Warrnambool College end, the Senior Boys Bullants played Catherine McAuley College (CMC) from Bendigo at the Mack Oval on Tuesday June 4th. Catherine McAuley College were coming off 2 big wins, one against Emmanuel by over 100 points. The Bullants were up against it, but for some boys it was their last ever game and they were ready to give it 100%.

Early on our tackling pressure was really good as was our contested craft, but we continued to turn the ball over coming out of our backline. CMC made us pay and with the use of the wind, they kicked 5 goals to our 1 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, we started to change direction instead of kicking it down the line, but this quarter our last kick inside 50 gave our forwards no chance. At half time The Bullants were down by 7 goals.

After half time, our effort went up a gear (we started to use the “STING!”) and we used the ball better around the contest to free up a team mate with a bit of time to execute his foot skills correctly. We were able to spread the ground better, switch the footy and make CMC defend. We were able to hold them to 2 goals with the wind. Unfortunately, we went goalless for consecutive quarters. In the last quarter CMC kicked away but we were able to kick a goal thanks to Flynn “Ben Brown” Gurry who marked strongly and kicked accurately after going back 150 metres for his run up!

Flynn competed hard and gave us a great contest at CHF all day. Henry Owen was elusive through the midfield and down back. Mitch Colson, Ollie King, Matt Bradley and Ollie Bridgewater rucked gamely against a giant while Lachie McLeod and Ollie Annett gave us a lot of midfield drive. Down back, Nunda Murdila and Jacob Henderson won a lot of 1 on 1 contests and rebounded continuously. Dylan Scoble was exceptional down back and rarely got beaten. The Bullants tried hard but were outclassed. The Bullants should hold their heads up high the way they competed throughout the game.

The final score was

Catherine McAuley College

13 Goals          6 Behinds        84

Defeated

Warrnambool College Bullants

2 Goals            4 Behinds        16

Better Players: Dylan Scoble, Lachie McLeod, Jacob Henderson, Henry Owen, Ollie Annett, Flynn Gurry, Nunda Murdila and Mitch Colson.
