Sydney Dance Company

Online Workshop

Student report

Our GSSC Dance students were treated to a live workshop via a TV screen in the Dance Studio at Wanganui Campus last week. Thank you John Perez and Paris Mercer for the following summary on behalf of the students:

The workshop was something new and exciting especially with folks coming from Sydney! It’s a shame it was done online and not in person, however, I still enjoyed every minute of it! I had the opportunity to work with different students showcasing their skills and abilities to gather around and dance! I even made new friends along the way. Despite the pandemic getting in the way, I’m glad Mrs McGregor was still able to pull it off at such short notice, for without her, this experience wouldn’t be possible!

Our class was delighted to spend some time, virtually, with the Sydney Dance Company on Thursday 19th  August 2021. Originally, our classes had planned to go to Melbourne to witness their extravagant performance of 'Impermanence', an original piece by the company, but unfortunately due to COVID restrictions we were unable to do so. Luckily Sydney Dance company were gracious enough to take the time out of their personal days to choreograph with us online over a large and vibrant video call in the dance studio and we are extremely happy, grateful and lucky that they could do that for us.

The workshop itself was so engaging and can only be described as 'groovy', it had the class ready for learning, and filled with laughter and smiles at every turn! Teaching Artist, Luke Hayward, even taught us some moves that helped them achieve the piece 'Impermanence' itself! It brought heaps of joy to the combined year 9, 10, 11 & 12 dance students, bringing people together, as well as giving us all the chance to let loose.

I really enjoyed how unique it was, it taught students how to think outside the box, how to go with the music, and feel our movements - not just choreograph them. Not to mention, it gave us many tips to expand on our improvisation together.

It was truly a once in a lifetime experience, and we can't thank the Sydney Dance Company enough for spending this time with us! We can't wait to see them again, and what they might have in store for us next time.
