Office Oracle

Recently, a local lady called into the Blackhall office and handed over a lovely silver-plated jug which she had picked up at an op shop. On getting it home she noticed there was a (faint) inscription on it, reading:

We ran it by the School’s archivist who outlined a few significant things that happened in 1944/1945, as follows:

  • Greta (MJR) Lyttle died on 2 August 1944. In that year there were 129 pupils including 15 boarders;
  • In 1944 the School was officially transferred from Greta (MJR) Lyttle to Margaret (MAE) Lyttle;
  • In 1945 WWII ended and boarding ceased at the School.

It’s highly possible, although we cannot definitively say, that this little jug could have been gifted to Margaret (Mug) on the successful conclusion of the first year of her tenure as Headmistress.

After nearly 80 years it has been returned and now resides in Cressida’s office at Blackhall where it is adorned with beautiful seasonal flowers and foliage from the garden.

DUE TO THE CURRENT LOCKDOWN, THE FOOD DRIVE HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL FRIDAY 20 AUGUST. PLEASE LEAVE DONATIONS IN THE BLUE BAG AT THE BLACKHALL FRONT OFFICE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY.
