Connecting to Learning in the DP: Physics, Sports Exercise & Health Science, Business Management

Year 11 students learning about tendons, ligaments, joints and muscles in SEHS class

Physics

The IB Physics class has just finished the topic of Electricity and Magnetism. Students have performed experiments with fantastic results, showing us that the experimental does align with the theoretical. They have learnt the right-hand rules for magnetism and can now successfully predict the direction and force of a magnetic field around a current-carrying conductor.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

Sports, Exercise and Health Science (SEHS) incorporates the traditional disciplines of anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition, which are studied in the context of sport, exercise and health.

So far this year, students have carried out experimental investigations in both laboratory and field settings to complement the learning within the classroom. These have provided opportunities to acquire the knowledge and understanding to apply scientific principles and critically analyse human performance.

The Tokyo Olympic Games have also provided students with opportunities to study the limitations of human performance, skill classification, learning processes and biomechanics.

Business Management

Business Management is a new subject at Preshil this year and challenges students to engage with aspects of business decision making, including the concepts of change, culture, ethics, globalisation, innovation and strategy. The content examines business management tools, techniques and theories through the syllabus by looking at case studies and examples from the business world.

Currently, in our unit Financial Control and Management, we are examining the decision-making and business functions that are particularly related to the demise of American energy company Enron in 2001, the largest bankruptcy reorganisation in US history at that time.

In the new year, some of our HL students will engage in research and report on an issue facing an organisation or a decision to be made by an organisation. If you are willing to be involved in supporting the research component of our projects, please email me for further details.
