Savannah's Success

How our one of our School Captain's dreams are coming true

Our School Captain Savannah Edwards has been successful in her audition to attend Transit Dance School in Brunswick in 2022.

Transit Dance is a Melbourne based dance training institution offering unique nationally recognised qualifications aimed at training & transitioning students into their dance careers.

Boasting world-class teaching faculty, small capped class sizes and a focus on career progression. Their 100% performance based courses are ideal for students serious about making a career in dance.

We asked her a few questions:

How old were you when you first started dance?

I first began dancing when I was aged 4, once I started nothing could stop me

What is it that makes dance your passion?

I think enjoying dance from a young age has helped me love it even more after dancing for 14 years of my life.

I love dancing because it allows me to express who I am as a person, dancing is another way for me to stay social with all my friends at dance, dancing is how I stay physically active, it’s how I blow off my negative energy, it allows me to have greater self-esteem and just because it is so much fun!

Do you have a favourite style?

I love all styles of dance, I do classical ballet, contemporary, jazz and acrobatics. I personally enjoy contemporary as this is the style, I would love to continue the most in my career, however I can’t pick just one style I love them all.

How many hours per week did you start out at and end up doing to get you into Transit Dance?

When I was younger, I would only dance for two hours of the week, but now pre-covid leading up to a performance, competition, or an audition I would be dancing every night of the week for at least 4 hours every night, not including the hours I would do in my own time at home.

How are you coping with the external subject and school in Year 12?

Balancing time for school and dance has been more difficult than usual but I have managed so far, knowing that perusing a career in dance has been my dream from a young age I have dedicated myself to my training for the last few years making it my goal to achieve.

Like everyone online learning is difficult but this year in 2021 has been the most difficult, as one minute you’re at face-to-face learning in a routine and then just like that your back at home trying to stay motivated and focused.

Since online learning I have had to adapt my training and commitment to dance at home, thanks to my mum and dad they helped me clean out a space in the shed and set up my own area for me to continue dancing during lockdowns a space for me to enjoy what I love doing.

What happens to Savannah Edwards when she graduates - where to do graduates from your school usually go? Will we see you on stage somewhere? in a musical? ballet? on tour with a rock star?

After completing my two year course with Transit Dance, which is a ‘Pre Professional Contemporary’ course, I can then decide where I want my future to take me, I can decide to continue training and developing my styles in a broader range if I wish, I could transfer into a larger company trying to gain a contract with them or I can allow my qualifications to let me audition for upcoming shows, musicals, music videos, performing with a celebrity just to name a few options.

Hopefully after having my time dancing professionally, I would love to continue in the performing arts industry, either teaching or even starting my own dance school somewhere in the future.

Special mentions

A massive thanks to my mum of course, she has been one of the biggest supporters and helped me from day one, driving me to and from rehearsals, paying for all my fees, uniform requirements, shoes, and costumes, learning how to do hair and makeup she never thought she would need to know until I can now do it myself.

Without my dance teacher Miss Angela’s high level of dedication and standards I would not have reached the level of technique I am at today.

The entire school is proud of you Savannah, modelling the drive and passion that it takes to achieve your goals.

You embody our values, Pride in your achievements, Respect for your commitment to achieving your goals and Courage to go after them in the first place.
