Athletics Championships

Congratulations to Alanna Peart on her selection for the 2021 World Athletics Under-20 Championships in August. Alanna will represent Australia at the Oceania Athletics invitational series on the Gold Coast, train with the team for two weeks and then compete in the Federation Event in Canberra. Unfortunately, the team will not travel to Nairobi, Kenya due to COVID, but they will compete in the two-part competition series as they continue their development pathway towards the Olympic Games.

Athletics Australia Chief Executive Office Peter Bromley said “The athletes we have selected are some of the most impressive athletes from our next generation, and some of them will no doubt become household names in years to come as we look ahead to Birmingham 2022, the World Championships next year and Paris 2024”.

Alanna is a year 12 student who is successfully balancing her race walking commitments with her study.

We wish Alanna the very best in the Australian team.

HOCKEY

This term BHS has been able to field both junior boys and girls teams. It is the first time for many years that there has been a boys’ team.

Ballarat High School was one school in Ballarat chosen by Hockey Victoria to run 5 weeks of coaching during training on Monday nights. Amy Walsh (HV), together with Anthony Kearle (senior girls’ coach) and Emma Barber (year 10) have been teaching new skills to both beginner and more experienced players. It has been a welcome part of the hockey program.

Both teams have been competing in the BAS competition with wins/draws and losses recorded. Emma has coached both teams during their matches on Wednesdays and Thursdays and her knowledge and assistance is much appreciated.
