STEAM

Congratulations to our wonderful Year 8 students for showcasing their Emergency Housing solutions to students in Year 10 as well as students from Mater Dei Primary and Sacred Heart Primary School. 

Students created their solutions in response to the following design challenge: 

Students are to research and design their own, accessible, self-sufficient, off-grid emergency house to be used in response to a natural disaster.

They worked in teams consisting of a Project Manager and Sustainability Officer, Engineer and Architect to build and pitch their concept to a live audience.

Robocup Junior Australian Spike Prime Competition

Congratulations to Miley Gibson, Harvey McLachlan and Holly Umback for submitting their design idea for the theme: “Embark on a Spike Prime World of Discovery.” Students had to work as a team to research, document, design, build and create a prototype of their autonomous robot in response to the theme. They then collated their work and presented it through a video presentation. Students should be proud of their achievements in the development of their code and the functionality of their design “Artemis 3”.

Year 9 - MANSW Investigating with Mathematics

Year 9 students volunteered to undertake the Investigating with Mathematics competition. Students worked tirelessly over the course of Term 2 to build and extend their Mathematics knowledge in areas beyond their stage.

Mater Dei Catholic College Numeracy Approach

Numeracy skills are the foundational building blocks to accessing core concepts students learn across Key Learning Areas. The Mater Dei Numeracy Approach was therefore designed and developed to help improve the numeracy skills of our Year 8 cohort. 

Mathematics, Technology and Applied Science (TAS), STEAM and Science classes have been focussing on embedding questions from the Number, Algebra, Measurement and Geometry strands in Daily Review questions. Students will focus on the following areas this term: 

• Graphing skills in STEAM
• Area skills in TAS
• Scale and conversions in Science 
• Times tables and worded problems in Maths. 

Students will be given feedback on whether they are: 

• At standard
• Above standard or
• Below standard 

for the numeracy skills they are developing according to the ACARA Numeracy Progressions.
