Our New Literacy Instructional Models

At Rollins Primary School, we are committed to providing every student with high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction. To support this, we have developed Literacy Instructional Models for both our P–2 and Grade 3–6 classrooms.

These instructional models outline the structured framework that teachers use during the first hour of literacy each day. While the learning content changes across year levels, the overall structure remains consistent, ensuring students experience high-quality teaching every day.

Our Literacy Instructional Models include dedicated time for:

• Reviewing and consolidating previously taught skills. 
• Explicit instruction in handwriting, phonics, spelling and morphology. 
• Developing reading fluency through repeated and supported reading. 
• Regular opportunities to check for understanding using strategies such as mini whiteboards, cold calling, Think-Pair-Share and exit tickets. 

Having a consistent instructional model across the school provides many benefits. It helps students know what to expect each lesson, maximises learning time, supports smooth transitions between year levels, and ensures all students receive explicit, systematic instruction based on the best available research.

These models reflect our commitment to delivering engaging, structured literacy lessons that build strong foundations in reading, writing, spelling and oral language, giving every student the best opportunity to succeed.
