Weekly Values Focus - Resilience

Term 4, Week 1: Footscray West students have a go
At Footscray West, we have a go! Having a go means being willing to try something new, even when we are not completely sure what will happen.
Sometimes new experiences can make us feel excited, nervous or unsure. That is normal! Being brave does not mean that we never feel worried—it means taking a safe and sensible step forward, even when something feels unfamiliar.
We can have a go by trying a new activity, sharing an idea in class, joining a new game at recess or giving a challenging task our best effort.
We can also step into uncertainty when we do not know whether we will succeed straight away. For example, you might feel nervous about putting your hand up because you are unsure if your answer is correct. Having a go means sharing your thinking anyway and remembering that mistakes can help us learn.
Trying new things safely can also help us discover strengths we did not know we had. Perhaps you try drawing and discover that you enjoy being creative, join a new game and make a new friend, or attempt a difficult maths problem and realise that you are more capable than you thought. Every time we take a safe chance and have a go, we learn something new about ourselves.
Next week, let’s look for opportunities to be brave and try something new. Is there an activity you have been unsure about? Is there a new game, idea or challenge you could have a go at?
Small steps can lead to big discoveries.
