This year, Western Port Secondary College introduced SOME (Science of Mathematical Education) Maths Intervention to support selected Year 8 students in building confidence, strengthening foundational skills and achieving success in mathematics.

Delivered in small groups three times a week, the program provides students with explicit teaching, additional practice opportunities and personalised support tailored to their individual learning needs. Through targeted activities, visual learning strategies, regular feedback and revision, students are developing a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts in a supportive environment.

Early results have been extremely encouraging, with students demonstrating increased engagement, growing confidence and improved transfer of skills into their regular mathematics classes. We are proud of the progress our students have made so far and look forward to seeing the program continue to grow and positively impact student learning outcomes.
