Geography Learning in Term 2

In Term 2, students across the school will engage in rich geographical inquiry under the overarching theme of connection, care for place, and understanding our world. Across all year levels, learning will focus on exploring how people interact with environments, how location influences ways of living, and how we can care for the world around us. Students will develop their knowledge of Australia and the wider world through mapping, investigation, discussion, and creative expression, building strong links between Geography, values, and real-world understanding.

Each Year level will explore a key question that will guide their learning in Geography:

  • Foundation:

How do natural and man-made features of the land connect to Aboriginal culture, stories and perspectives, to help us care for Country?

  • Year 1/2:

How can exploring countries and understanding the world help with our connection to land?

  • Year 3/4:

How does location shape the way people live and what values influence their connections to places and countries?

  • Year 5/6:

How does geography shape the way people live, connect to places and help them understand and protect the environment?

St John's Geography Expo

A key highlight of this term will be our Geography Expo, where students will showcase their learning in creative and engaging ways. Each year level will present their understandings through hands-on, inquiry-based experiences that highlight student voice, creativity, and deep thinking about place and environment.

We are currently considering the structure of the Expo and welcome feedback on whether it should be held as:

  • a single whole-school event in the final week of term, or
  • staggered sessions across the week.

A single event may support families with multiple children attending, however we welcome staff feedback to ensure the best experience for students and our school community.

We look forward to a term of meaningful inquiry, strong connections to place, and an inspiring celebration of learning through our Geography Expo and will send through details and invitations to our families soon.
