Book Week Incursions

On Thursday 6th August, as part of our Book Week celebrations, we are excited to be able to provide our students the opportunity to engage in 2 amazing performances: Mickster's Bookworm Adventure and Stringing it Together! The cost for these 2 performances is only $5.00 which must be paid by 23rd July via the QKR App.

Space Excursion at Hamilton Secondary College

Our Year 6 students recently enjoyed a Space Excursion at Hamilton Secondary College, where they learnt about space, constellations and the significance of the night sky in Aboriginal cultures and storytelling. It was a fascinating experience that complemented our NADOC Week learning.

Classroom Progress from Term 2:

Room R5 (Reception)

Students have been exploring a range of narratives, with a particular focus on events and characters. They have enjoyed engaging with familiar texts, including We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and The Three Little Pigs, and have been practising oral retells to build confidence with sequencing and storytelling. In Art, students created colourful birds as part of their learning connected to the Dreaming story How the Birds Got Their Colours. They have also participated in Reconciliation Week activities, and last week we welcomed new mid-year entry students for their first transition session.

Room R1 (Year 1)

Students have had a busy and exciting start to the term, taking part in Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week and National Simultaneous Storytime activities. In English, they are building narrative writing skills through bookmaking and learning to add detail with adjectives, verbs and conjunctions. In Science, students are exploring daily and seasonal changes before beginning Chemical Science investigations.

Room B2 (Year 2)

B2 has been focusing on procedure writing through fluency reads, making activities and following steps. So far, students have made popcorn, rockets, paper cup launchers, paper surprises and paper planes. In Maths, the focus has been fractions of shapes and collections, while Science and Technology have been linked through designing, testing and recording procedures.

Room O2 (JP Special Options)

In Maths, students have been exploring addition and subtraction through storytelling and hands-on farm play. They have used farm animal toys and pens to add and subtract, then work out ‘how many animals are on the farm’. In Science, students are Weather Watchers, recording daily observations on a weather chart before learning about the sun and solar system.

Room G2 (Years 3-4)

Students are thoroughly enjoying their class text study of Matilda, taking part in rich discussions about characters, themes and language while developing their own narratives. In Science, they have been learning about rocks and minerals, investigating their properties, ‘how they are formed’ and where they can be found in the natural world.

Room G3 (Years 4-5)

Students have been developing their research and note-taking skills as they work towards writing information reports about animals and insects. They are learning how to gather key facts, organise information and use subject-specific vocabulary to create clear and detailed reports. In Mathematics, students have been practising multiplication and division through area and perimeter activities, helping them make connections between number concepts and real-world measurement. In Science, they are exploring the water cycle and learning about how it impacts daily life and the environment.

Room G4 (Primary Special Options)

In G4 our learning has been centred around SPACE this term. We have learnt how the movement of the Earth creates day and night and have travelled to the 8 planets of our solar system, recording facts along the way. The students are now working on their own story books, using their knowledge of space to write about ‘what a trip to space might be like’.

Room Y6 (Year 6)

Students have been exploring the Australian Constitution and census in connection with Reconciliation Week, with a focus on the importance of the 1967 Referendum and how it contributed to change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across Australia. In Civics and Citizenship, students have also been learning about the parliamentary process by writing their own Bills to be considered and passed in parliament. Through Art and Science, students are investigating the night sky and constellations, making strong connections to Aboriginal peoples’ knowledge of the sky and how it was used for survival, while creating their own night sky artworks.

Room Y2 (Rec – year 1 IEL)

Y2 students have started the term with an 'All About Me' unit, learning vocabulary for body parts, likes and dislikes, and family members before writing their own descriptions. They also explored Chinese New Year by being lion dancers and drummers, and by creating crafts such as horse stamps and lanterns to celebrate the Year of the Horse.

Room Y1 (Years 1-3 IEL)

Students are learning about living things, including plants and animals and what they need to survive. They have also begun a mapping unit, which will help prepare them for the zoo excursion. In English, students are expanding sentences using ‘because’ and ‘when’, and adding detail with adverbs and adjectives when describing animals and their behaviours.

Room Y3 (Years 3-6 IEL)

Y3 students are exploring koalas and other iconic Australian animals through Science, Art and literacy. They are learning about animal features, habitats and adaptations, creating artworks and using books, documentaries and online resources to research a chosen animal. Students are then organising their information and writing structured information reports using scientific vocabulary.

Performing Arts

Students across the school have been exploring music, rhythm and performance in a range of ways. Year 5/6 students are developing ukulele skills and exploring Chris Mould's graphic adaptation of The War of the Worlds. Middle primary students are learning recorders and Gustav Holst's The Planets, while junior primary students are using chime bars, percussion, The Nutcracker and Tiddalik the Greedy Frog.
