Settling Back into the School Routine

Welcome back everyone to term 3, we hope that you all had a wonderful and restful break!

As we move through the first week of Term 3, many students have already settled back into the classroom with smiles, stories from the holidays and enthusiasm for the term ahead. For some children, however, returning to the routines and expectations of school can take a little longer.

If your child has found getting back into the school routine challenging this week, they are certainly not alone. It is quite common for children to experience some hesitation or anxiety after the holidays. A change from relaxed routines, family time and later mornings back to early starts, structured learning and busy school days can be a significant adjustment.

School resistance can look different for every child. Some children become quieter than usual, others may be more emotional at home, complain of headaches or tummy aches before school, or express that they don't want to attend. These behaviours are often a sign that a child is finding the transition difficult rather than simply trying to avoid school.

The reassuring news is that, for most children, these feelings settle as they reconnect with familiar routines, friendships and the predictability of school life.

There are a few simple ways families can continue to support this adjustment over the coming weeks:

  • Keep morning and bedtime routines as consistent as possible.
  • Allow plenty of time in the morning to avoid unnecessary rushing.
  • Acknowledge your child's feelings while also expressing confidence in their ability to manage the school day.
  • Talk positively about school and celebrate the small wins, whether that's walking into the classroom independently, reconnecting with friends or trying something new.

While it can be difficult to see your child upset, maintaining regular school attendance is one of the most important ways to help them build confidence. Each successful school day reinforces the message that they are capable of managing challenges and that school is a safe and supportive place to be.

Starting a new term is a reminder that every child adjusts at their own pace. With encouragement, consistency and a strong partnership between home and school, children develop the confidence and resilience they need to thrive.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to make Term 3 a positive and successful one for every student.
