Jaxon Loving Bush School:

From Whaea Nicole:

I want to share Jaxon's carving journey so far...Jaxon has persevered for well over a term with this carving. He chose a piece of wood, chopped it down to size, drew a spoon shape on it, and started the carving and shaping process. He used a handsaw, various files, carving knives, and chisels to work the wood into the creation he currently has. He is working on forming the bowl shape of the spoon, which he will do using carving knives, chisels and charcoal. Finally, he will complete the handle design, then sand and oil his spoon, making it ready for use.

The wood used is from our school bush. It was a tree that was uprooted during the 2023 Auckland floods. Jaxon told me that “making the round shape was the hardest part” and “The chisels are my favourite tool to use”, and when I asked him why he kept going for so long, he said it's because he really likes carving. I'm super proud of him :)

More from Whaea Nicole:

Bunnings Westgate donated the materials to make this workbench. It will have bench vices attached to each corner so we can be a lot safer when we are carving and building. It's kid height and very sturdy :)
