Dear families,

We have had a fabulous start to Terrm 2! Already, students have settled back into routines and displayed our school values both inside the classroom and out in our school yard. We want our students to be the best versions of themselves and continue to be proud of being part of Modbury School P-6.

Mother's Day Stall

Thank you to Marisa for organising a fabulous Mother's Day stall for our students. This year we held our Mother's Day stall in the Canteen, which was a great use of space. We also introduced a pre-paid voucher system of Modbury dollars, which worked very well. Overall, we raised $353.00 to be used to continue to support our school. We hope all our families enjoyed Mother's Day and spent some quality time together.

Emergency Procedures

Emergency procedures practice is an important part of our school. Each term we practice the procedures for an Evacuation and Invacuation, to support everyone in knowing what to do if there is a real emergency. This term, we practised an off-site evacuation and the Leadership Team was extremely impressed and proud of our Modbury students in how quickly and calmly they conducted themselves in moving to our off-site location.

Walk Safely to School

National Walk Safely to School Day is a community initiative that aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can provide for the long-term well-being of our children.

Thank you to the families that met us at Civic Park and walked to school together. We hope this will become an annual event and have more people join us next year.

School Fundraiser - Modbury Hotel

Don't forget about our upcoming school fundraiser at the Modbury Hotel. $5.00 of each schnitzel sold on the day will be generously donated to our school. Please make your booking at the Modbury Hotel. We would love to see you there.

Garden Harvesting

From Room 9 and Ms Paula

We harvested potatoes and had a great time learning in the garden.

From Room 7 and Miss Phillips:

We went to the garden today and harvested some beetroot! We spoke about beetroot being an ‘acquired taste’. The children came up with many wonderful adjectives to describe how the beetroots looked. Our children were able to take home their harvest and cook it up to eat!

Bucket Brigade

We have introduced Bucket Brigade - where students can help to keep our clean and tidy and free of rubbish. Each week or fortnight we offer Bucket Brigade for students to engage in. The students involved have been highly motivated and engaged in looking after our school grounds. Steve couldn't believe how clean the yard was in Week 1! Thanks to the students who volunteer their time - we are super proud of you!

Staffing Update

The Business Manager position has been filled and we warmly welcome the appointment of Bianca Martyn as the new Business Manager starting in Term 3. We will farewell Liz Allen at the end of this term and wish her all the best for her retirement.

Premier's Reading Challenge

We have started the Premier's Reading Challenge and aim for all our students to have completed the Challenge by early Septemeber. Please message your child's teacher via Class Dojo for an update on how many books your child has read.

National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

Now in its 24th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.

Next week, our students will engage in this national event together on Wednesday. Our students will be able to enjoy this event with a packet of popcorn and share in the love of reading books together.

Volunteer session

Volunteers are so important to our school community. If you can offer an hour or two to support our students or school, please book into one of our volunteer sessions. The session will give you all the information you need to become a volunteer at Modbury School. Our next session is at 6 pm on Thursday 6 June, please call 8264 2027 to reserve your place.

Cultural Celebration Day

Please join us at assembly on Tuesday 21 May at 9:10 am to celebrate our community's cultural diversity. Students will have opportunities to participate in activities throughout the day. We are looking forward to celebrating next week.

Australian Early Development Census (AEDC)

The AEDC Data Collection period has started for our Reception stu. Understanding how children are developing when they start school can help schools and early childhood services focus their efforts and planning to meet the needs of children and families. The AEDC provides a snapshot of how children have developed by the time they start school. It's also a reliable predictor of children’s wellbeing and education outcomes. Children who are thriving when they start school are likely to continue to do well. Once children fall behind in their learning they are more likely to stay behind.

The AEDC helps schools and early childhood services consider local issues that are likely to impact children’s development and wellbeing, and in turn the sites and their communities. This information can help communities understand the environments and experiences that are shaping children’s development in the early years.

National Disability Insurance Scheme - NDIS

The NDIS, Australia's inaugural national Scheme for individuals with disabilities, offers direct funding to individuals for services like Speech Pathology, Developmental Education, and Occupational Therapy. At Modbury P-6 School, several of our students benefit from NDIS support, and we actively promote collaboration between Allied Health Professionals and our Teachers. Recognising the challenge of scheduling appointments outside of school hours, we facilitate onsite therapy on a case-by-case basis.
