A Message To Our Community

As we come to a close on the school year, this is usually a time to reflect on growth, learning and the many achievements of our students and community. However, it is also important to acknowledge that this period has been overshadowed by events that have deeply shaken us all.

I wish to express my deepest condolences to the families affected by the tragic Bondi attack, and particularly to those who have lost loved ones in such senseless and heartbreaking circumstances. We hold especially close in our thoughts the parents and family of 10-year-old Matilda. The loss of a child is unimaginable, and our hearts break for her family and for all those whose lives have been forever changed.

I also want to acknowledge members of our own community who may have personal connections to the Jewish community or who are feeling the weight of grief, fear or distress as a result of this violence. Please know that you are not alone. Our school community stands with you in solidarity, compassion and care.

The unnecessary loss of life is never acceptable. It is always devastating, but when violence impacts innocent children, the sense of injustice and sorrow is overwhelming. In moments like these, we are reminded of the responsibility we share as educators, parents, and members of our communities, to stand firmly against hatred in all its forms.

As a community, darkness and destruction can only be confronted through standing together,  showing empathy and care for all members of our community and not being a bystander but an upstander. We must be unequivocal in stating that there is no place in our society for antisemitism, racism or discrimination. These divide, dehumanise and harm, and they stand in direct opposition to the values we seek to instill in our young people: respect, inclusion and compassion for others.

As we move into the holiday period, I encourage everyone to look after one another, to check in on those who may be struggling, and to seek support where needed. Our school remains committed to being a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for all members of our community.

Thank you for the strength and kindness you continue to show one another. It is in these moments that the true character of a community is revealed.

On behalf of the school, I wish you a safe and restorative break, and I look forward to continuing our work together in the new year with renewed purpose and hope.

Kind regards,

Karl Russell
