'Clay and Chardonnay' 

Our Clay & Chardonnay fundraising evening last Thursday was a fantastic success, bringing together more than 40 parents for a relaxed and creative night in the Art Room.

Guests enjoyed an evening of clay making, creating an impressive range of unique and beautiful ceramic pieces.

We are thrilled to share that the event raised over $3,000, with all funds going towards the ongoing repayments for our new kiln. This valuable addition to the Art program will provide exciting opportunities for students to explore ceramics and clay work for years to come.

In the classroom this week...

Prep students will begin a unit on ‘line’. They will practise different types of lines before creating a ‘line’ monster using oil pastels and watercolours.

Grade 1 students will not have art this week due to the public holiday.

Grade 2 students will be completing their rainbow serpents. Working with a partner they will make one for each person, focussing on tight wrapping, no loose ends, colour combinations and working as a team.

Grade 3 and 4 students will be using their foam pictures of indigenous flowers from the Manningham area, that they created last week, to create prints. They will also be adding the third layer to their rainstick, adding details and indigenous inspired designs to their work.

Grade 5 students will be finishing off their scratch art animal and illustrating the story of their animal’s adventures using their own symbols and markings.

Grade 6 students will be creating an organic mandala using white pencil on black paper. They will focus on organic shapes inspired by nature, eg. leaves, tree branches, rocks etc.

 

Performing Arts

In the classroom...

Due to the public holiday on Monday, and Victorian State School Spectacular Rehearsals on Tuesday and Wednesday, not all classes will have Performing Arts this week.

 

Prep

Students will continue learning a dance inspired by the picture story book Can You Dance? by Sally Morgan. They will also learn an Acknowledgment of Country song and continue exploring the difference between sounds with a steady beat and no beat through singing, movement and percussion activities. Students will experiment with creating sounds using instruments with both steady and no beat patterns.

 

Grade 1

Students will focus on learning about rests in music using the rhythm syllable zaa. They will explore how silence is an important part of rhythm and practise performing and creating rhythm patterns that include rests. Students will also continue learning to sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Woiwurrung language.

 

Grade 2

Students will learn a song inspired by an ice cream van before composing their own ice cream van jingles using glockenspiels. They will explore melody, rhythm and pitch while creating short musical ideas designed to sound catchy and memorable. Students will also continue learning to sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Woiwurrung language.

 

Grade 3/4

Students will begin learning the song Sing on Country, which uses a range of Aboriginal languages. They will also explore the string family of instruments, investigate how different string instruments create sound, and use digital composition skills to create music that conveys different moods and emotions.

 

Grade 5/6

Students will continue developing their digital composition skills by creating music designed to communicate different moods and emotions. They will also complete their research project on an instrument of their choice, exploring its sound, history, cultural significance and role within different musical styles and contexts.

 

Auslan

Grade 1 and 2

Grade 1 and 2 students will continue to practise letter recognition and decoding familiar words through a range of activities in Auslan this week. Students will also explore how we tell the time in Auslan, learning to recognise and sign simple times and phrases. Grade 1 students will focus on recognising and signing o'clock times, while Grade 2 students will extend their learning by using time signs to describe parts of their daily routine.

 

Grade 3 and 4

This week in Auslan, the Grade 3 and 4 students will explore the important connection between language, culture and identity. Through videos, discussions and reflection activities, students will learn about Deaf culture, the role of Auslan within the Deaf community, and the different ways Deaf and hard of hearing people communicate and connect with others. Students will consider what makes up their own identity and reflect on how language can help people feel a sense of belonging and community.

 

Grade 5 and 6

In Week 8, our Grade 6 students will showcase the culmination of their learning as they finish and present the original Auslan visual texts they have been developing. Students have been busy planning and rehearsing their presentations, focusing on the effective use of facial expressions, signing space, movement and visual storytelling techniques. We have a fantastic range of creative projects in the works, including fairy tale retellings, school tours and news reports. It has been wonderful to see students' confidence and creativity grow as they explore different ways to communicate meaning through Auslan.
