Level 3 & 4

Welcome to Week 8! We are rocketing through Term 2 and hope you all enjoyed the long weekend. The excitement is building as we prepare for our highly anticipated excursion to the Melbourne Museum. Our students are eager to explore the incredible exhibits and dive deeper into their CBL learning outside the classroom – thank you to all the parent volunteers who will be joining us!

CURRICULUM

Literacy

Spelling

We have wrapped up our learning about all things Silent Final E (SFE), and we’re moving into new territory. That’s right, we’re talking about the ‘i not the end’ rule! You will hear plenty about it in the upcoming weeks as we learn about all its iterations and uses.

Reading

I Am Australian / compare and contrast with We Are Australian

Due to the short weeks and excursion, we will continue looking at the song lyrics to ‘I Am Australian’. We will find connections to what we have already learned within the lyrics and will compare and contrast with ‘We Are Australian’ and similar text that is told from an indigenous perspective.

Writing

In Writing, we will complete and share our Acknowledgements of Country. We will take the time to look for similarities and differences in wording, topic and sentence structure to help strengthen our own writing.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:

  • ask your child to identify words in the books they’re reading that have SFE rules in them
  • speak to your child about what is special about being Australian.

Maths

Grade 3

In Mathematics, Grade 3 students begin exploring fractions. This will include the concept of a fraction in relation to a single shape, as well as groups of objects.

Grade 4

Students in Grade 4 will shift their focus from area and perimeter to 2D Shape. They will begin by classifying shapes by their characteristics and move to the connection between common shapes and composite shapes.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:

  • discuss shape in everyday situations using words such as edges, vertices, length and width
  • encourage your child to practice identifying and naming the shape of 2D shapes in their bedroom and house
  • encourage students to practice their times tables. Try saying your times tables out loud, writing them down, or asking someone to quiz you. There is also Multiverse on Mathletics that can be a fun interactive way to practice.

CBL (Challenge Based Learning)

In Week 8 our Challenge Based Learning will continue to focus on the guiding questions,‘How has colonisation impacted First Nation Peoples connection to Country (land, culture and language)?’ We will move to consider the contrast that was created by the impact of the British on the Aboriginal way of life.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:

  • speak with your child about the aspects of Aboriginal life that would have been impacted by the British and why they chose to inhabit Australia.

Wellbeing

SWBPS

In response to what we are seeing in our classrooms, we will be focusing on taking responsibility for and showing respect for property. This will include personal, borrowed and school owned belongings. We are seeing a lack of care being taken with property at school and would love to see an improvement in this area.
