Mr Irwin's Message

Social Media Savvy
This week I wanted to share some important information about student use of social media and messaging apps, particularly platforms like TikTok, and how this is impacting our students at school.
Over recent times, we’ve seen an increase in friendship issues, conflict, and wellbeing concerns that are directly linked to online interactions outside of school hours. These situations are often being carried into the school day, affecting students’ sense of safety, self-worth, and ability to engage positively in learning.
We’re also aware that there has been some confusion around recent Australian Government changes relating to social media access. While these laws set minimum age requirements for platforms, they do not automatically remove access for underage users. Many students are still able to access accounts by entering incorrect dates of birth, meaning the responsibility for monitoring and managing use remains largely with families.
I would encourage you to have a plan at home for:
• Monitoring your child’s access to social media and messaging apps
• Having open conversations about respectful and safe online behaviour
• Setting clear boundaries around app use, particularly for primary-aged children.
Our priority is always to support students to learn, grow, and build positive relationships. We will continue to work with students at school around digital safety, respectful relationships, and managing conflict, but we cannot do this alone. Your partnership in this space is critical. I know not all families have the time to read the newsletter each week. I will also be reiterating this information as a separate email this week due to its importance.
If you have any questions, or would like support around managing your child’s use of social media, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Assemblies Term 2
Our first assembly of Term 2 will take place in Week 3 of Term. Our first two weeks of school coincide with our house and interschool cross country events which cause some disruption to our normal routine. Once our first assembly commences on Friday May the 8th, they will run fortnightly for the remainder of term and we will conclude the last day of term with our 2:00pm SWAG assembly.
Bye for now and have a great week.
