GENERAL WASTE BY MICHEL STREICH
Michel Streich’s book is an excellent read for families to understand the importance of every day sustainability practices at home, school and the community. Through the character General Waste, we find out what happens when he buys more than he needs and doesn't have a plan for the mounting waste.
Gram- Gram his grandmother saves him from a life of collecting stuff. She teaches General Waste how to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. She helps him sort items he needs and donate items he no longer needs to charity. Gram- Gram shows him how to repair broken household items, mend clothes and reuse waste to create new artwork. She teaches him how to grow plants for food and prepare that food from scratch to make meals. General Waste learns how to recycle food scraps to make compost. He notices that growing trees and plants creates habitats for birds, small animals and good insects.
General Waste learns important life skills which makes him appreciate nature around him. He realised that getting out and enjoying life was more important than collecting stuff.
