Year 2 Mainstream

What we have been up to:
Our Day camp! Here are some photos! We look forward to sharing these stories and quotes in the next newsletter!
Over the last two weeks of term 4, our year 2 students have continued exploring flight and design through our integrated unit: “Up, Up and Away!”. They have run helicopter test flights to investigate the factors that affect its fall through the air. We have also been learning a lot about how different things fly. This is all in preparation for their home project coming up next week. Your child will be bringing home a letter explaining this project. It asks that students create a “flying machine” at home using recycled materials. Students will follow the design process to create their flying machine. Please read over the letter carefully with your child. We are very excited to see what they (and you;) come up with!
Maths:
We have continued to explore fractions over the past few weeks, looking at fractions of a group of objects and fractions of a shape. We made posters describing 2D and 3D shapes and sorted them by their attributes.
English:
Students have been learning to take notes on how different things fly. We have been very impressed with the amount of enthusiasm for the topic, as well as the recording of facts in their own words. We have also used the knowledge of the design process, to start writing procedural texts. We followed the writer’s process to create a draft titled “how to make a paper helicopter”.
This term, year 2 classes are continuing learning the Little Learners Love Literacy Stage 7.3 and 7.4 sounds. To reinforce their learning, students could be practising their spelling at home.
7.3 sounds that we have focussed on for week 3 are the /oo/ and /le/ sounds: oo as in goose and le as in little poodle.
7.4 sounds that we have focussed on for week 3 are the long /o:/ sounds: o-e (code), o (pony), ow (show) and oe(toe).
What’s to come in the next two weeks:
Alongside students’ flying machine creation (happening at home) students will be exploring different materials that they might use to make their machine and how we can join these materials together to help our machines fly!
Students will use the facts they have collected to write an explanation text on how something flies and continue to practise the writer’s process of planning, drafting, revising and editing.
In our phonics sessions in week 4 and 5, we will be exploring the sound and spelling patterns for /oo/ sounds: u_e (rude), ue (true), ew (blew) and ui (fruit) and the /ow/ and /oi/ sounds: ow as in brown cow and ou as in ouch, then oi as in oink and oy as in joy.
In Maths, we will start exploring time (analogue and digital). Students will make their own analogue clock and have a go at reading and comparing digital and analogue clock faces and how they display time differently. We will also be reviewing place value focussing on two- and three-digit numbers.
As we are now in term 4 and the sun is getting stronger, please remember to pack a hat for your child every day!
