Grade 6

Term 4 is always a busy term, particularly for our Grade 6 students! The students have settled back into school routines beautifully and are making the most of their final term at Oatlands. There’s a real sense of excitement in the air as we move towards the end of primary school and prepare for all the special events that come with it.

In English, students have been finishing their text study of Blueback by Tim Winton, building on their learning from last term. Through the novel, they explored important themes of sustainability and conservation, considering the impact humans have on the environment and the importance of protecting our oceans. Students then put their persuasive writing skills into practice by writing a letter to the editor from the perspective of one of the characters in the novel. Their letters aimed to raise awareness of marine conservation issues and persuade readers to take action. It was wonderful to see students drawing on their understanding of the text to develop thoughtful and convincing arguments.

In Maths, students spent last term developing their multiplicative thinking skills and exploring shape, transformation and the Cartesian plane. These topics provided opportunities for students to strengthen their problem-solving skills, apply mathematical reasoning and explore different ways of approaching challenges. This term, we are revisiting key concepts involving fractions, decimals and percentages, building on students' prior knowledge and developing their confidence in applying these skills to a range of situations. It has been great to see students working so well, demonstrating persistence, sharing their thinking and challenging themselves as they continue to develop their mathematical understanding.

Last term, as part of our Business and Economics unit, students completed their Ice Cream Inventor project, providing an opportunity to apply their understanding of how consumers make choices and the factors that influence purchasing decisions. Students began by surveying their peers to investigate consumer preferences and identify popular ice cream flavours. They then used this information to develop their own ice cream product, considering how factors such as price, flavour and marketing might influence its success. Students also explored the costs involved in producing their ice cream and determined a suitable selling price. The project brought together their learning from throughout the unit, allowing students to put themselves in the shoes of business owners and make informed decisions based on consumer needs and preferences.

This term, students will begin our Health and Human Development unit, exploring the physical, emotional and social changes that occur as they grow and develop. Lessons will provide students with age-appropriate, factual information in a safe and supportive environment, encouraging them to ask questions and develop a greater understanding of themselves and others.

We encourage families to continue these conversations at home by talking with their child about what they have been learning each week. Open conversations between home and school play an important role in helping students feel informed, confident and supported as they navigate this stage of their development.

The remainder of Term 4 will fly by, with a range of end-of-year events and activities planned to celebrate this special final chapter of primary school. These experiences are designed to give students a chance to reflect, connect and make lasting memories with their peers before heading off to secondary school.

Please keep an eye on Compass for upcoming events and consent forms so your child doesn’t miss out. We appreciate your continued support in helping students stay organised during this exciting time of year.
