AFL Girls Gala Day: On Friday 19th April, a team of girls in year 5 and 6 competed in the Maroondah Division AFL Girls Gala Day at Manson Reserve, Wantirna. There were 21 teams entered across 5 pools. In our pool, we played Croydon Hills PS, Kalinda PS and Antonio Park PS.

In our first game against Croydon Hills, we were up for the challenge and fought hard. Unfortunately, we lost 49 to 0 to a team that was very physical (all tall) and it was obvious they had lots of girls that played AFL. For most of our girls, it was their first game of AFL ever.

As the day progressed, the girls developed their confidence and understanding of the game. In our second game we played Kalinda PS. It was a close game but in the end we lost by 1 point, 13 to 12. In our third game, we played Antonio Park PS and won 22 to 6. It was our first win and the girls were very excited.

After the rounds, we finished 3rd in our pool and played a consolation final against Great Ryrie PS. It was an even match and in the end we drew 7-7. The game was well contested and was played in great spirit. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the day and had fun tackling, getting dirty, meeting new friends and wearing their mouthguards.

I would like to give a massive shout out to Mr Edgcumbe who gave up his time to coach the girls. A special thank you to all the parents who assisted with transport to and from the venue; Mrs Alexander, Mr Edgcumbe, Mrs Berardini, Mrs Di Gennaro and Mrs Ali. Also thank you to the parents who came to support the girls.
