Giving Textbooks a Second Life

As part of our Living Justice Living Peace focus, we are encouraging students and families to consider how small, practical choices can make a positive difference to our environment and our school community.

With the 2027 school booklist due on 30 October, we are encouraging students to consider buying and selling second-hand textbooks. This initiative allows students to keep using their textbooks right through to their final lesson, before selling them to another student who requires the same book. Rather than books being used for one year and then sitting unused, we can give them a second life within our school community.

An email will be sent to students and parents in the next week with more information and encouragement to sell textbooks they no longer require and consider purchasing their required books second-hand. Reusing textbooks helps reduce waste, saves the resources and energy required to produce new books, and can also provide a more affordable option for families.

We also encourage families to make use of the Facebook group ‘St Joe’s 2nd Hand Uniforms’, which is already a wonderful resource for our school community to buy and sell pre-loved uniforms. The group can also be used to advertise and purchase second-hand textbooks.

Choosing to buy and sell second-hand textbooks is a simple but meaningful example of Living Justice Living Peace in action. By reusing what we already have, we are caring for our planet, reducing waste, supporting one another and making more sustainable choices as a school community. We encourage students and families to get involved and help give our textbooks a second life.
