Positive Behaviour for Learning

Every child has the right to learn and every teacher has the right to teach.

Lesson Plan: Showing Respect for Difference

Step 1: List Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

We are learning to :

  • Identify ways people are different and ways we are similar
  • Explain why everyone deserves to be treated with respect
  • Demonstrate respectful words and actions when responding to differences
  • Identify what to do when they see someone being excluded, teased or treated unfairly

It will look like:

  • using kind and respectful language
  • being inclusive
  • Being a positive bystander and speaking up for others

Step 2:  List a rationale for teaching the behaviour

Why is it important?

Holy Rosary School Values: Relationships, Respect, Resilience, Integrity, Kindness.

Holy Rosary School Expectations: Safety is our right. Learning is our responsibility. Respect is our way.

Step 3:  Identify examples and non-examples of the desired behaviour

What would the behaviour look/sound like?

Examples

Standing up for others

Including others no matter if they are different or similar to you

Asking questions to understand

Helping someone who needs it

Adjusting games or rules to make sure everyone can be included

Listening to others

What would the behaviour not look/sound like?

Non-examples

Making assumptions about other people

Laughing or joining in when someone is teasing someone else

Leaving people out because they are different to you

Copying someone's way of speaking to make others laugh

Making hurtful comments about someone's family or culture
