Class Placements
Teachers are currently hard at work creating our 2027 class groups. To support every child's learning and growth, we carefully follow these steps:
Principles
The following principles guide the decision making process when allocating students to classes.
- Each child is a member of a class that will provide the best opportunity to learn.
- Well-balanced classes take into account: gender mix and the social, emotional, academic and physical needs of each child.
- Friendships grow, change and develop throughout the course of primary school years.
- Connectedness to peers and opportunities for the development of constructive peer-to-peer relationships is imperative for all students over the course of their primary schooling.
- The principal is responsible for the final composition of each class.
Implementation
Throughout Term Four each year, class teachers with specialist teacher input and in collaboration with the Leadership Team, form classes for the following year.
The composition of each class is based on the professional judgement of school staff taking into account the following factors:
- Academic, social and emotional learning needs of each child
- An appropriate balance of learning needs and gender in each class.
- Friendship patterns and social compatibility
- Requests by parents/carers for consideration in relation to their child’s particular learning needs.
Parental Requests For Special Consideration
Requests by parents/carers for special considerations regarding their child’s home group placement are to be made in writing on the Request for Special Consideration Form. This is made available to parents/carers via a Google Form in Term 3.
Parent/carer requests for special consideration must specify the specific educational need that the parent seeks to address.
While all requests will be given due consideration, there is no guarantee that the Principal will accommodate the request.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do we ask parents to leave class placement in the hands of the teaching staff?
As professional educators we strive to make the right choices, taking into account all of the information we have about all students. We understand that parents/carers do know their children best, however, teachers have all of the academic and social information about every child and can make sound judgements to meet the needs of every child at school.
Can I request my child to be placed with another child or not placed with another child?
Yes. Parents/carers may request this but need to give clear reasons why this is necessary. All requests must be made in writing using the Request For Special Consideration Form. It is important to consider that the school knows your child’s friendships and that placing them without that particular friend may be so that your child expands their friendship base. We want children to be able to work and socialise with a variety of other children and build skills to make new friends.
In addition, sometimes we may get competing requests from parents where one parent wants their child to be in a class with a friend but the friend’s parents have requested that they not be in the same class. Friendships can change throughout primary school, students leave, more students arrive and so it is important for your child to develop friendship building skills.
Can I request my child to be placed with a particular teacher?
No. All teachers at Holy Rosary are caring and committed educators who strive to ensure that all students are provided with a high quality education. The school’s Leadership Team understands each teacher’s strengths and will always endeavour to place students with teachers who are best placed to suit their needs.
When will I know my child’s Home Group placement?
Children will be notified of their Home Group for the following year during The Step Up Session at the end of Term 4 and parents will receive a notification after this session.
What if my child or I am unhappy with my child’s placement?
Given the exhaustive process undertaken, class placements are generally considered to be final. Changing a student placement would be rare.
Changing one student’s placement at the request of a parent can mean that many other changes also need to take place to continue to meet the needs of other students. It is a complex balance that requires consideration of the full impact on all student placements.
If you have concerns that your child's placement does not meet their needs please make an appointment to discuss this with the principal.
