Sr Brigid Arthur Inspires Staff Through Stories of Hope and Compassion
Killester staff recently had the privilege of welcoming Sr Brigid Arthur, co-founder of the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP), for an inspiring presentation centred on justice, compassion and human dignity.
Founded in 2001 by the Brigidine Sisters, BASP provides practical support, advocacy and friendship to people seeking asylum as they rebuild their lives in Australia. Through housing assistance, education programs and community connection, the organisation continues to support some of the most vulnerable members of our society.
Sr Brigid shared powerful stories of resilience, courage and hope, encouraging staff to remain connected to the experiences of those who have fled war, persecution and hardship in search of safety and opportunity.
Her message strongly reflected our 2026 theme of Living with Justice, Leading with Kindness and Living with Compassion, reminding us of the importance of responding to others with empathy, understanding and action.
We thank Sr Brigid for her time, wisdom and lifelong commitment to justice, hospitality and compassionate service.
Vocational Major at Killester
At Killester College, our Vocational Major (VM) program provides students with meaningful opportunities to learn through real-world experiences while developing the skills, confidence and resilience needed for life beyond school.
Through hands-on learning, workplace experiences, community partnerships and social justice initiatives, students engage in practical learning that connects directly to their future pathways. Whether creating and selling heat bags to support charitable organisations, operating Brigid’s Blessing, participating in community projects or developing workplace skills, students learn the value of contributing positively to their community.
The program reflects our commitment to Strength and Kindliness, encouraging students to demonstrate perseverance, responsibility and leadership, while also showing compassion, service and respect for others.
Vocational Major empowers students to grow as capable learners, confident individuals and active citizens, preparing them for success in further education, employment and community life.
Killester LIVE Radio Program
Throughout Term 2, our Year 11 and 12 Vocational Major students participated in the Killester LIVE Radio Program with facilitator Ralph Barba.
Across three sessions, students developed skills in radio broadcasting, interviewing and live presenting. What began as nervousness quickly transformed into confidence as students interviewed staff and community guests in a professional radio station setting.
Our Year 12 Politics students also participated in a panel discussion on the Ukraine–Russia conflict, applying their classroom learning to a contemporary global issue and engaging thoughtfully with diverse perspectives.
This experience strongly reflected our 2026 theme of Living with Justice, Leading with Kindness and Living with Compassion. Through respectful dialogue, active listening and meaningful conversation, students learned how their voices can be used to foster understanding, advocate for others and engage constructively with the world around them.
We thank Ralph Barba, Ms Rosati and the Leadership Team for their support in making this valuable learning experience possible. Congratulations to all students involved for embracing new challenges and demonstrating such impressive growth in confidence and communication.

Breakfast Club
Breakfast Club has been a valued part of the Killester community for many years, providing students with a nourishing and welcoming start to the school day each Thursday morning in the Food Rooms.
Students can enjoy toast and sprinkles, fresh fruit and, during the colder months, a warm bowl of porridge before classes begin. More than just a meal, Breakfast Club offers an opportunity for students to connect with peers and staff in a supportive environment, ensuring no one starts the day hungry.
The program is led by our Year 12 Vocational Major student, Georgia, with the support of dedicated staff and student volunteers, and is overseen by Lucy. Their commitment helps create a warm and inclusive space that is appreciated by many students across the College.
Breakfast Club is a wonderful example of our 2026 theme of Justice - Serving with Courage, Leading with Kindness and Living with Compassion. By ensuring that all students have access to a nutritious breakfast and a welcoming place to begin their day, the program promotes dignity, inclusion and care for others. Through this simple but powerful act of service, students and staff help create a community where everyone feels valued, supported and able to thrive.
We extend our sincere thanks to Georgia, our volunteers and Lucy for their ongoing dedication to this important initiative.
