🇩🇪 Was für ein toller Tag! –
Our First German Day 🇩🇪
What a wonderful day we had celebrating our very first German Day at Holy Spirit! The sun was shining, the costumes were colourful, and our school was filled with German language, culture, music, games and lots of fun.
Our students and staff certainly embraced the spirit of the day with their amazing costumes. We saw plenty of black, red and yellow – the colours of the German flag – as well as some very creative characters! We had famous German tennis stars Boris Becker and Steffi Graf, a cuckoo clock, a German Bratwurst, a few Gummibärs, and lots of soccer players, Fräuleins and boys proudly wearing Lederhosen. The creativity and enthusiasm were fantastic to see!
We started with our German Day prayer, prepared by Corinne, and learned about St Hildegard von Bingen, a very inspiring woman ahead of her time.
Our students enjoyed learning some traditional German dancing with Sherree on the top courts and were introduced to the Schuhplattler. Everyone had a great time dancing.
There was plenty of crafting too, with students making colourful German-themed keyrings and bracelets.
We enjoyed an incursion by Carrousel Theater who performed two traditional bilingual puppet shows of Aschenputtel (Cinderella) to us.
Of course, no German celebration would be complete without pretzels! Our students enjoyed delicious, fresh German pretzels delivered especially for the occasion by a German bakery. A huge thank you to our wonderful P&F team for organising and delivering the pretzels to the classrooms– they were a huge hit!
There was plenty of action on the oval too. Caeleigh planned and Jess taught a range of fun German sports activities, giving students the opportunity to be active while learning about games and sporting traditions.
A special thank you goes to one of our school dads, Joost, who generously stayed for the whole day and introduced our students to Jakkolo, a traditional Dutch and German game played on a wooden board with discs. It was a real hit, with students eagerly having a go and challenging each other.
Students also had the opportunity to explore German Art with Jacinta. Our younger students were introduced to Die Maus, the famous German orange animated television character, and created their very own Maus puppets. Older students learned about German painter Paul Klee and created an artist inspired sunset castle with water colours.
We finished our wonderful German Day with a whole-school parade, giving everyone the chance to show off their fantastic costumes one more time. It was a joyful celebration of everything German, and it was wonderful to see our whole school community getting involved.
Our LOTE leaders Rosie, Georgia and Charlie helped plan this special day and put a lot of effort into the preparation.
A huge Dankeschön to everyone who helped make our first German Day such a memorable and successful day. We are already looking forward to doing it all again next year!
