Top Class Excursion

Year 10 and VCE Music students attended VCE Top Class Music and Sound on Tuesday March 31st as part of the VCE Season of Excellence. This event presents some of the most outstanding performers from VCE Music in 2025.

We attended both the morning and afternoon sessions, which were held at the Melbourne Recital Centre in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. We heard performances from a wide range of instruments, including the Drums, Piano, Voice, Guitar, Bass Guitar and Saxophone, and there were both solo and group performances. Many of the items were a student’s ‘reimagining’ of a song, which is a requirement of VCE Music Contemporary, which Wheelers Hill students are completing this year. To see and hear school students performing at such a high level is certainly both astounding and inspiring. It gave our students an increased understanding of what is required in VCE Music, and has hopefully encouraged them to continue with their own musical journey.

Beginner Band Incursion

It was an eventful start to Term 2 in the Music Learning Area, as we held our annual Beginner Band Incursion on the second day of Term 2. Our Year 7 students commenced the event with a full band rehearsal prior to lunchtime. During Period 5 a number of Year 9 music students assisted during our sectional rehearsals, where students broke into their instrument groups to practice their specific parts. We came back together for another full band rehearsal and to determine the program for our concert. At 5pm family and friends arrived at D01 for our concert, where they were able to hear what students had learnt across the day. The group has made an impressive start to the year, and we are excited to hear them at their next performance, which will be at the Winter Concert in August.

Instrumental Soirees

We have our Instrumental Soirees coming up in May. Students will be performing either solos, or in small groups on their instrument, and is a great chance for family and friends to come and hear the individual progress students are making during their instrumental lessons. Students have the option to perform in a range of settings, and we are encouraging all students to be involved in one form or another. Please speak to your instrumental teacher if they have not yet mentioned this event to you, as this performance will be the Assessment for Semester 1.

Performance dates are as follows:

Woodwind, Brass and Bass Soiree: Monday May 25th

Guitar and Percussion Soiree – Tuesday May 26th

Keyboard and Voice Soiree – Wednesday May 27th
